Position Summary


The Senior Associate, Stewardship will work closely with habitat interns, volunteer stewards, landowners, funders, and partner organizations to create and implement stewardship strategies as a key component to sustainable conservation across Audubon's key geographies, with a particular focus on on the wetland complexes of the Calumet Region of Illinois and Indiana. They will oversee the hiring and field work of seasonal habitat interns and seek to expand the program to new prioritized geographies while increasing its diversity of participants and impact on the ground.

The Senior Associate will assist in the development of restoration, science, and management plans across key geographies where stewardship, community science, and seasonal crews will play a critical role. In addition to seasonal staff, they will recruit, develop, and support new volunteers (stewards and monitors) with the specific goal of developing strategies to diversify the volunteer community. This role will include a substantial amount of field work and occasional travel.

Compensation:


Salary range based on geo-differentials:


  • $42,000-$50,000/year = Greater Chicago, NW Indiana

  • $47,000-$57,000/year = Chicago


  • Essential Functions


  • Recruit, hire, and manage seasonal habitat interns, working up to six months in the field.

  • Oversee and coordinate the fieldwork of Audubon intern crews in conjunction with Audubon staff, landowners, other partners and the volunteers of each site.

  • Collaborate with Conservation and Science staff to promote, recruit and retain volunteers.

  • Engage communities and the Audubon network through events, outreach strategies and materials, including social media and promotional publications, and activities in target sites.

  • Develop, sustain, and enrich relationships with local communities while co-developing programming

  • Oversee contractual habitat improvements at priority sites.

  • Work with other Audubon staff to build new funding relationships and implement seasonal intern crews in new prioritized geographies.

  • Work with other Audubon staff to track and communicate ecological and professional development success of the intern program.

  • Develop and help communicate an understanding of local ecosystems and restoration best practices.

  • Employ collaborative processes that ensure high-quality restoration work is delivering on the needs of multiple partners, skills of interns, and interests of volunteers.

  • Represent Audubon at meetings and events with a focus on stewardship development.

  • Secure and implement resources that support professional and volunteer land managers and owners.

  • Assist with the development and execution of restoration plans for specific site level actions.

  • In coordination with Audubon science staff, train community scientists in methods and protocols.

  • Develop trusting relationships with the Chicago Park District, Forest Preserves, new priority landowners, volunteers, and Site Stewards to improve quality and impact of Audubon's work.

  • Work closely with Audubon staff to define and implement strategies that support the development of existing and new stewardship groups.

  • Lead regular volunteer workdays at priority sites.

  • Build an understanding of how to develop and support self-sustaining stewardship volunteer groups.

  • Ensure safety of all seasonal interns and volunteers by compliance of all safety guidelines and regulations and completion of all relevant trainings by interns. Complete all necessary paperwork, reports, and other forms and information as needed.

  • Assist in the development, implementation, and management of federal, state, and philanthropic grants, helping with writing, administration, reporting in a timely fashion.

  • Partner with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.

  • Other job-related duties, as assigned.


  • Qualifications and Experience


  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in ecology, natural resource management or related field.

  • 3+ years field experience with habitat restoration techniques and 1+ years experience in a managerial/supervisory position. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.

  • Demonstrated project management and problem solving experience.

  • Ability to work on diverse teams with individuals from a variety of backgrounds.

  • Ability to implement anti-racist practices in all aspects of work.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to engage and motivate diverse audiences.

  • Must be comfortable interacting with the public and staff of multiple partner organizations.

  • Ability to create promotional materials for intern recruitment and programming, stewardship events and social media engagement.

  • Experience in organization and implementation of recruitment strategies for hiring purposes and tracking programming long-term.

  • Excellent judgement and a strong concern for safety of interns, volunteers, and the public.

  • Ability to speak Spanish or second language is preferred, but not required.

  • Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions and on difficult terrain, with or without accommodation, while maintaining a positive attitude and setting an example for intern crews.

  • Valid U.S. driver's license and the ability to travel throughout the Great Lakes' region. Reliable transportation required.

  • Must be physically able to work outdoors in both hot and cold conditions of the Great Lakes region, often walking long distances and lifting up to 50 lbs. of materials.

  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including evenings, early mornings, and weekends.
