Job Title:Respiratory Therapist - LeadDepartment:University Hospital | Respiratory TherapyScope of PositionThe respiratory therapist team leader will help assure the appropriateness, quality, and consistency of all aspects of respiratory care. The team leader will act as the Respiratory Therapy (RT) clinical liaison to physicians, nurses and other health care providers. This position will provide all types of diagnostic and therapeutic Respiratory Therapy procedures, in accordance with hospital and department policies, under the direction of a licensed physician. The Respiratory Therapy Department works under the medical direction of the Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy, or his/her/their designee.Position SummaryProvides clinical leadership, and helps ensure quality and appropriateness of respiratory care.Duties and Responsibilities 10% Team LeaderAssures continuity for all aspects of respiratory care (ventilatory weaning, treatment therapy, progress notes, assessments, and patient teaching).Participates in departmental (RT or Unit) quality improvement/utilization management committee, through committee membership, gathering data, and implementing committee directives.Prepares, reviews, and revises departmental policies and procedures as needed.Coordinates, conducts, and prepares minutes for team meetings & huddles.10% Clinical ResourceMaintains knowledge of all current, applicable research and information published in peer reviewed medical journals.Assists RT staff, nurses, physicians and other healthcare providers in applying respiratory therapy knowledge to current practice. Provides education for RT staff, nurses, and physicians, at the bedside and in the classroom.Functions as clinical liaison to physicians, nurses and other health care providers.Ensures RT staff participation in rounding.15% EducationProvides departmental orientation for new employees.Participates in the development and delivery of annual skills assessments.Acts as clinical preceptor for new employees and RT students.Provides instruction and mentoring to staff and students as needed.60% ProceduresWorks in a clinical staff assignment 60% of the time. Clinical assignment includes the following duties:Assesses the need for all types of RT procedures offered at OSUWMC.Administers all types of RT procedures in accordance with current clinical standards and department policies.Assesses the need for ventilators, Bi-PAP/CPAP, oxygen and aerosol equipment in accordance with department policies and protocols.Manages ventilator settings in accordance with ventilator management guidelines.Communicates the need for changes in therapy to co-workers and other members of the health care team as appropriate.Keeps up to date with the state of the art in RT procedures.Demonstrates compassion and sensitivity to patients, families, visitors and other staff while providing therapy.Systematically organizes and prioritizes work to maximize productivity.Identifies opportunities for improvement in patient care and departmental processes.Obtains arterial blood and performs whole blood analysis, including blood gas analysis in compliance with departmental and credentialing agency standards.Performs cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.May provide TB testing and administers influenza vaccines under the direction of the Occupation and Health Department, and in compliance with their guidelines.Performs bedside diagnostic procedures including pulmonary function testing, metabolic testing, pulse oximetry, and capnometry in accordance with hospital and departmental policies.Communicates results to appropriate members of the health care team.Recommends appropriate therapy or changes in therapy indicated by these tests, in accordance with hospital departmental policies and current clinical standards.Demonstrates compassion and sensitivity to patients, families, visitors and other staff while performing tests.Recommends appropriate therapy or changes in therapy indicated by these tests.Communicates results and therapy recommendations to other health care team members as appropriate.Performs quality monitoring in accordance with departmental guidelines.May act as first line resource for assessing/solving whole blood analyzer equipment problems.5% EquipmentAssists with equipment evaluation and research prior to acquisition.Acts as first line resource for assessing/solving equipment problems.Communicates equipment needs to co-workers and other members of the health care team as appropriate.Sets up and operates ventilators: Bi-PAP/CPAP, oxygen, aerosol, and other RT equipment in accordance with current clinical standards and department policies.Maintains all types of ventilators: Bi-PAP/CPAP, oxygen, aerosol, and other RT equipment in compliance with manufacturer guidelines and department guidelines.Keeps up to date with new advancements in RT equipment.Demonstrates cost-effective use of equipment and supplies.Identifies opportunities for improvement in the use of equipment and supplies.Any and all other duties as assigned.Organizational Expectations Practices within the Medical Center's policies and procedures. Successful completion of RRT examination offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care required. Master's degree preferred.Ongoing: Must comply with Ohio Medical Board Licensure laws and rules.
