Penn Language Center Full-Time Lecturer in American Sign Language (ASL)

The Penn Language Center invites applications for one full-time Lecturer able to teach all levels American Sign Language in an undergraduate program committed to dynamic language instruction and Deaf community-based collaborations and learning. The initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility of renewal for up to an additional two years, contingent upon a satisfactory performance review and approval of the Dean. The teaching load is 6 courses per year of elementary through advanced language and culture courses.


Native or near-native linguistic ability in American Sign Language, teaching experience at the university level or evidence of supervised teaching at the university level, and excellent teaching credentials are required. MA required, Ph.D. preferred.

We also encourage applicants to upload evidence of excellence in teaching, such as a teaching portfolio including, if available: 1) teaching evaluations, 2) sample syllabi, assignments and assessments, etc., and 3) statement of professional development including best teaching practices in ASL. A sample teaching video, if available, is highly desired, but not required. The University will contact the referees with instructions on how to submit their letters. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
