Car Hire Specialist at Genesee and Wyoming Railroad

Job Description:

SUMMARY:


The person in this position is responsible for managing the monthly expense of train cars sitting on designated railroads. The Car Hire Specialist will be assigned approximately 15 to 18 entities to manage. This will be accomplished by research and in-depth data analysis from multiple sources which includes train car movement reports, train car tracing, train car leases, and special agreements. The goal is to ensure all opportunities for reducing expenses have been applied. On-the-job training for this position is provided by the company.


 


RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Review and analyze data for assigned car-hire payables roads 

  • Verify reclaims for accuracy relating to industry rules and agreements

  • Review of various car lease agreements

  • Post cash receipts and manage receivable aging and collections

  • Assist in the month-end closing process

  • Compare final payable reports to estimate and verify accuracy

  • Prepare and review RCH payments and additional transactions

  • Prepare vouchers for general accounting

  • Process payable claims

  • Perform other clerical duties such as filing, sorting, mailing, and data entry

  • Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned


 


REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:



  • Basic accounting knowledge 

  • Strong mathematical abilities and analytical skills.

  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Access)

  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • Cross-cultural awareness

  • Good decision-making skills

  • Self-starter requiring minimal supervision

  • Independently motivated


 


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS: 



  • Associate degree in accounting, mathematics, or related discipline is required

  • Bachelor’s degree is a plus
