We are seeking a Director, Portfolio Strategy to lead cross-portfolio strategy to support prioritization decisions across the full portfolio, including on-market products and projects in development.

The role collaborates with key stakeholders in Product Management, Marketing, Finance, R&D, Corporate Strategy, and Commercial to define portfolio strategy to support Illumina's short and long-term objectives and leading market position.

Responsibilities:


  • Create and maintain up-to-date portfolio models, dashboards, and cross-portfolio views of opportunities and investment scenarios

  • Serve as a thought partner for Global Product Management and R&D to evaluate opportunities and support portfolio-level optimization of pipeline investments based on internal/external data

  • Develop robust financial models to assess the market opportunity for new products and the potential financial return over a 5+ year time horizon

  • In collaboration with the Marketing Finance team, engage individual business case owners to pressure-test key assumptions and ensure balanced risk/success probability assessments across business cases

  • Develop deep expertise of internal market models, market landscape, and Illumina products. Translate data for use in business case development and scenario modeling

  • Act as a key voice on market landscape in portfolio planning processes, product launch timing, sustaining innovation, and portfolio rationalization

  • Support key projects to enhance our financial modeling approach to drive better insights and decisions around portfolio investments and trade-offs

  • Collaborate with Strategy and Partnership teams to provide support for M&A or partnership deals

  • Support the development and execution of pricing strategy across entire product line across all regions

  • Perform other tasks or ad hoc projects as needed


Requirements:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 18 years of related experience, with 10+ years of experience managing direct reports. Advanced degree, PhD, or MBA a plus.

  • Experience with sequencing technology, in vitro diagnostics, and medical device products strongly preferred.

  • Global Product Management experience, including ownership of product strategy, new product development, regional marketing and sales enablement, pricing strategy, and S&OP. Direct experience managing an international business and/or working internationally a plus.

  • M&A or partnership experience including valuation, deal negotiation, and integration

  • Proven ability to evaluate and solve complex or ambiguous business scenarios and understand the strategic implications of different business approaches

  • Ability to build complex business cases with quantitative market analytics, revenue, NPV and profitability projections

  • Strong working knowledge of the main elements and drivers of income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows

  • Exceptional communications skills with a proven ability to influence at all levels in a large matrix organization across multiple functions

  • Commitment to accuracy and quality while meeting multiple goals or deadlines, with the ability to work independently

The estimated base salary range for the Director, Portfolio Strategy role based in the United States of America is: $183,700 - $275,500. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
