Department Information



The mission of the Office of Research Compliance (ORC) is to ensure that research conducted by IU and affiliated researchers is not only in compliance with all applicable regulatory, statutory, and organizational requirements, but also meets the standards of best practices while minimizing impediments to research and burdens on the research community.



Job Summary



Department-Specific Responsibilities


  • Oversees and participates in the planning, coordination, and administration of projects instrumental to ongoing research compliance efforts at and beyond the scope of the University, and provide complex, comprehensive administrative support to the Associate Vice President (AVP) for Research Compliance.

  • Coordinates and participates in the development, management, and implementation of Research Compliance programs and projects. Tasks include, but are not limited to, preparing data analysis, conducting research, and creating reports related to all functional areas of the Office for Research Compliance (ORC).

  • Provides programmatic support to Compliance Project Managers.

  • Prepares regular reports regarding Research Compliance as related to specific project initiatives.

  • Researches, drafts, and revises content for various research compliance areas.

  • Develops or participates in the development of project schedules and monitors progress. Produces periodic status reports in order to direct project participants and update appropriate parties on progress.

  • Participates in the development, management, and implementation of project plans consistent with the requirements of federal, state, and local regulations and statutes, as well as compliance policies of the University.

  • Participates in committees, task forces, and meetings to facilitate resolution of compliance programmatic initiatives.

  • Assists with the organization and coordination of training initiatives for Research Compliance including ongoing compliance orientation sessions.

  • Regularly explores and identifies existing best practices as related to research compliance, and communicates findings appropriately.

  • Participates in management, editing, and design of ORC web content; coordinates and communicates with content contributors from all ORC areas.

  • Participates in the design and publishing of electronic announcements, newsletters, e-publications, and other communications involving Research Compliance resources.

  • Facilitates communications to Research Compliance staff and IU research community regarding research compliance related policies and procedures, operations, and actions.

  • Regularly interacts with various University officials and staff as well as those external to the University such as IU Health, IU Health Physicians, Eskenazi Memorial Hospital, the Veterans Administration, Regenstrief Institute, and other health care affiliates. Answers questions, requests information, forwards information, and arranges meetings.

  • Serves as administrative and technical resource to CITI Program web-based training learners and program officials.

  • Serves as liaison and resource person to high-level administrative offices, coordinate activities, exchange information, and resolve problems and concerns.

  • Investigates requests for assistance; prepares reports for consideration and action.

  • Creates correspondence, presentations, and performs research regarding research compliance issues and communicates those accordingly.

  • Performs administrative duties for the Office for Research Compliance including but not limited to scheduling multi-person meetings, travel reimbursement, and supplies.

  • Facilitates resolution of day-to-day issues that arise within Research Compliance and communicates issues to and on behalf of the AVP.

  • Performs research, prepares and assemble all pertinent background and compliance documents and materials for meetings to ensure that the AVP is fully prepared for all meetings.

  • Maintains files for meetings, committees, etc.

  • Reviews, recommends, and implements methods to improve or revise current administrative processes affecting the Research Compliance program areas.

General Responsibilities


  • Manages a small project, from start to finish, or one phase of a large project, ensuring on time completion within budget.

  • Develops project plan(s) and efficiently analyzes, tracks, forecasts, and reports on project metrics and shortfalls.

  • Reports on progress and provides regular updates to upper management.

  • Coordinates and communicates between various areas; conducts project meetings and prepares regular reports.

  • Collaborates with other departments to ensure that project objectives are achieved within established time frames.

  • May provide guidance and support to non-exempt staff.

Working Conditions / Demands



This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.
