Job Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:


Working directly with the principal investigator, the research technician carries out a broad range of research activities and procedures with varying degrees of latitude to independently determine techniques and establish protocol. S/he is expected to perform lab procedures with speed, method, and precision while understanding the theory and justification behind tests and procedures. S/he will work independently with minimal supervision. The technician is encouraged to identify and carry out his/her own research projects and pursue publications.



PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:





  • Responsible for tissue collection and database management


    • Coordinate with surgeons, pathologists, pathologist assistants, and pathology residents on tissue collection for the MGH GU Tumor Bank

    • Bank fresh human specimens.

    • Prepare and stain frozen tissue sections.

    • Collect and enter the relevant information into the MGH GU Tumor Bank Data Base


  • Responsible for providing samples for internal and collaborative research projects


    • Search internal MGH and external hospitals' medical/pathology l databases to identify desired samples.

    • Request, obtain or prepare tissue samples.

    • Coordinate with research personnel within his/her lab and other labs on sample analysis.


  • Responsible for specific research studies


    • Performing complex established laboratory techniques (e.g.- Immunohistochemistry Western blots, PCR, qRT-PCR, chromatin IP)

    • Develop a firm understanding of the field of GU Pathology and maintain a working understanding of the latest scientific literature in the field

    • Analysis of research data to troubleshoot and improve experimental protocols.

    • Presenting pertinent information and their interpretations of said information at weekly laboratory meetings.


  • Responsible for general lab operations and coordination such as:


    • Ordering general and specialty consumables and reagents

    • Initiation and updating of biosafety registrations.

    • Procure necessary service agreements for lab equipment.

    • Generate Material Transfer Agreements between the lab and outside institutions.

    • Overall responsibility for the day-to-day functioning and maintenance of the laboratory, including general lab equipment, relevant training, and any other items that are needed for the lab to perform daily.


Performs other duties or special projects that are department or unit-specific, and that are appropriate to this level of position.



SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
    • Knowledge of lab equipment's functionality and capability, including skills necessary for basic maintenance


    • Ability to work independently and as a team member.


    • Analytical skills and ability to resolve technical problems.


    • Ability to interpret the acceptability of data results.


    • Working knowledge of data management programs.


    • Computer literacy


    • Demonstrated competence in research techniques and methodologies.


    • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.


    • Good organizational skills and flexibility to handle multiple tasks in a busy environment.


    • Ability to identify problems and develop effective solutions.



    Qualifications

    EDUCATION:



    • Bachelor's degree in biological or physical sciences with knowledge on human anatomy or pathology.
