Job Description:

The Moscow Food Co-op seeks a Grocery Stocker who will provide excellent customer service to Co-op customers, assist with receiving, and ensure that grocery shelves are properly stocked and fronted, and back stock is rotated. The grocery stocker will also assist with routine floor and back space cleaning. Qualifications include working at a quick pace, the ability to stand on your feet for a long period of time, lift up to 50 lbs., be friendly and outgoing with customers, and effectively work with a team.

Full-time (38-40 hrs) or Part-time (20-29 hrs); Days vary, primarily closing shifts; Weekends required. Must be available to work during university breaks.

Job Description

Position Summary

The Grocery Stocker is responsible for assisting the Center Store Manager with providing excellent customer service by ensuring that the Grocery department is fully stocked and faced. This position will work with the grocery team on meeting goals for customer service, sales, margin, labor and productivity. This position works closely with the Center Store Manager and grocery team to support achievement of the Moscow Food Co-ops strategic goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Stocking


  • Prioritize out-of-stock items to be stocked as quickly as possible.

  • Maintain approximate floor plan in storage area, using location signs as needed.

  • Stock in grocery department. Make sure stock is rotated, maintained and faced.

  • Set a positive example in maintaining all merchandise, ensuring that all storage areas are in a clean and orderly condition: trash and recyclables taken out, boxes removed, surfaces dusted and wiped, spills cleaned up, floors swept and mopped, outdoor and up-top storage areas organized.

  • Participate in preparation and execution of inventory counts.

  • Communicate with co-workers to ensure timely and accurate stocking of all products.

  • Communicate with Grocery Manager about any problems with deliveries.

  • Maintain productivity of shift; act as a positive role model.

Merchandising


  • Maintain abundant, stocked, rotated and faced end caps, shelves, case stacks and displays.

  • Ensure sale signs are accurate and on the correct products.

  • Provide product information to customers and employees.

  • Ensure that store is faced at least twice daily: by opening, 7:00 am and dinner rush, 4:00 pm.

Department Maintenance


  • Keep retail display areas and back-stock in clean, orderly condition, meeting health department standards.

  • Record damaged and out of date products promptly and accurately.

  • Remove trash promptly, sweep and mop floor.

  • Dust and clean shelves when indicated while stocking grocery back stock.

  • Prepare department for inventory counts.

  • Maintain department equipment in working order. Monitor cooler and freezer temperatures (where applicable) and follow established procedures for handling breakdowns.

  • Follow safe working practices and ensure the backroom area is in compliance with OHSA regulations, and communicate any safety concerns to the Grocery Manager immediately.

Co-op Performance Standards

Customer Service


  • Demonstrate excellent customer skills, both internally and externally; Follow the 10-4 service rule

  • Make yourself available to customers; greet each customer promptly with a smile.

  • Handle customer complaints and questions courteously.

  • Coordinate with all supervisors and leads to address customer concerns, questions or thoughts. i.e., refunds, oops coupons, angry customers, broken machinery etc.

  • Help customers place special orders.

  • Accurately and completely record special orders and ensure the forms are delivered for processing.

  • Offer tastes, samples, suggestions for purchase of grocery product.

Communication


  • Communicate directly and professionally, following the Moscow Food Co-op Coworker Conduct Commitment.

  • Stay up to date on information in department log books.

  • Answer and route phone calls according to Moscow Food Co-op procedures.

  • Keep a working phone and personal email address for necessary communication from the Co-op.

  • Report customer suggestions, comments, and complaints to MOD or appropriate Manager.

Other Duties


  • Work cooperatively with others in the department and throughout store

  • Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality.

  • Take breaks according to department and store policy.

  • Follows the direction of the Manager on Duty (MOD).

  • Carry out established opening and closing procedures.

  • Complete Co-op-wide trainings as required.

  • Attend all inventories, dept. meetings, and all-staff meetings.

  • Participate in department and store-wide initiatives such as Open Book Management and others as they occur.

  • Offer suggestions and information about product.

  • Maintain accurate use of the time system, substitute for other staff as needed.

  • Ensure a safe working environment for all staff and customers.

  • Assist with training new staff when appropriate

Requirements


  • Commitment to the mission and goals of the Moscow Food Co-op.

  • High school diploma or equivalent; grocery stocking experience preferred.

  • Familiarity with the natural foods industry and the co-operative business model.

  • Motivated, energetic, outgoing, self-directed, positive, adaptable team player.

  • Excellent communication and problem solving skills.

  • Highly motivated with a sense of urgency and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment at all times with all levels of employees; able to work on a team or independently.

  • Basic computer and math skills.

  • Reliable, dependable, organized and able to handle multiple demands.

  • Regular, predictable attendance; including weekend, evening, and holiday work required.

  • Willingness and ability to meet the changing requirements of the job.


Physical Requirements


  • Remain in a stationary standing or sitting position for long periods of time.

  • Must be able to move about the store and surrounding co-op properties.

  • Ascend/Descend ladders and stairs.

  • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; Push/pull hand cart, racks up to 200 pounds.

  • Frequent kneeling, stooping, squatting, bending, reaching (overhead/front/side/back).

  • Ability to tolerate varying temperatures.

  • Ability to stand for long periods and to work in close quarters with other people.
