General Statement:

The Fleet Science Center’s Exhibit Technician supports the Fleet Mission and Visitor Experience Philosophy by being responsible for daily operations of over 25,000 square feet of Science Center galleries specifically related to the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of interactive science exhibits.

Must be available to work shifts on the weekend.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities, including mental requirements of position:


  1. Work under the direction of the Exhibits Director, and/or FT Exhibits Tech, to accomplish exhibit repairs or to replace related equipment.

  2. Help prioritize repairs and maintenance for all exhibits.

  3. Assist in the set-up and takedown of traveling exhibitions.

  4. Monitor current exhibits on the floor for maintenance and safety; assist in developing plans for moving exhibits for special events, etc.

  5. Monitor and ensure the presentability and cleanliness of the Fleet’s exhibit spaces.

  6. Maintain log of all exhibit maintenance and repair work.

  7. Must maintain current knowledge and abide by all safety rules and regulations as well as emergency plan manual procedures.

  8. Work flexible schedule to include possible weekend shifts.

Tools and equipment used to perform this position: Computer, audio visual equipment, miscellaneous shop equipment including: band saw, belt/disk sander, drill press, grinder, jigsaw, router, multimeter, and assorted power and manual hand tools and cutting equipment.

Supervision, direction, or guidance provided for this position:
Performs duties with moderate supervision. Seeks guidance and direction from supervisor for non-routine issues.

Business Location Presence:
This position requires physical presence at the business location during all assigned working hours in order to adequately perform all duties.

Physical Requirements of this Position:
Medium Work: Position involves ability to frequently or constantly exert up to 20 pounds of force and occasionally exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects.

Experience, education, or skills required of the incumbent in this position:


  • Strong understanding and knowledge of electrical, mechanical, audio/visual, and computer hardware.

  • Previous experience successfully repairing electronics, displays, exhibits, and/or other mechanical and computer technology and devices.

  • Proven ability to multi-task effectively, determine priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Proven ability to utilize and work safely with a variety of shop tools.

  • Proven ability to work independently as well as within a team environment.

  • Must have basic to intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook). Other computer software experience is a plus.

  • Proven ability to perform mathematical operations as needed for position.

  • Proven ability to handle multiple functions.

  • Knowledge and keen interest in science related topics a plus.

  • Must have a valid driver license and insurance.
