Job Summary/Basic Function:
The purpose of this position is to support the communications needs of New Student Programs (NSP). "Communications" includes, but is not limited to, planned emails (using Slate CRM), website content, and digital assets. This role is technical and also generates creative contributions (such as writing copy and layout work). This position will use the Slate CRM to drive strategic communications.

This position will work within the NSP team to understand and predict communications needs associated with all NSP programs and services, and will coordinate content with the Student Communication and Marketing team (SCM), functioning as the liaison between NSP and SCM. The work of this position makes it easier for Boise State students and their families to understand how to get started as a student. Well developed communication strategies will make the transition to becoming a Boise State student easier and will strengthen the partnership between Boise State and the parents/families of enrolled students.

Department Overview:
Boise State New Student Programs helps acclimate students and their families to the college experience. The general functional areas of our department include creating and implementing orientation, transition and ongoing engagement programs for new students and their families. Our work ensures our new first year, transfer, non-traditional, and international students have a smooth and positive transition to the Boise State University community.
Level Scope:
Entry-level professional with limited or no prior experience to contribute on a project or work team. Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives. Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. This level is typically focused on self development. Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training. Typically hold a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent relevant professional experience.
Essential Functions:
60% of time the Technical Communications Coordinator must support New Student Programs programs/services/events:

  • Work within the New Student Programs team to understand, execute and predict digital and communications needs.
  • Conceptualize and write clear, engaging, inclusive and grammatically correct messaging for a variety of communications including print collateral, web pages, emails, social media posts, event slides, etc.
  • Edit, proofread, and update copy for accuracy, inclusivity, and clarity of message.
  • Partner with the Student Communications and Marketing (SCM) team to create communications continuity throughout the student lifecycle.
  • Use technical platforms to align messaging with targeted audiences.
  • Assist with ensuring accuracy and consistency of messaging across multiple channels (i.e. departmental web sites, social media, event-based communications plans). Keep all channels current.
  • Facilitate engaging digital marketing/comm efforts, including all digital assets for large-scale presentations (slide deck curation); function as point of contact for the audio-visual team and the presenters using these digital assets during large-scale events.
  • Maintain a social media presence as needed.
  • Work with campus partners to produce effective messaging pieces.
30% of time the Technical Communications Coordinator must develop Communications Campaigns, in collaboration with Student Communications and Marketing (SCM):
  • Partner with the Student Communications and Marketing (SCM) team to improve the way we communicate with: students in the onboarding phase, students in their first year, and the families of enrolled students.
  • Help further developing existing communication campaigns; work with SCM to create more population specific communication approaches within existing communication plans (ex: channels for bilingual homes, off campus students, first generation students, etc.)
  • Coordinate inclusive, consistent and effective messaging across web properties.
  • Assist supporting the Bronco Families Newsletter, created by SCM.
10% of time the Technical Communications Coordinator must provide department leadership and support:
  • Provide departmental and divisional support by participating in various hiring committees and Student Affairs events and initiatives. Attend professional conferences, workshops, and/or seminars to continue professional growth and development.
  • Serve on cross-campus committees as appropriate, with attention to First Year Experience developments.
  • Assist other staff members with special events and programs as requested by the supervisor.

Minimum
Qualifications:
  • Ability to write quickly, cleanly, format, edit and review stories and photos for the web and produce stories of different types.
  • Excellent writing, editing and communication skills.
  • Experience using word processing and basic web content management materials

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Adobe Indesign
  • Fluent Spanish; the ability and willingness to create content in both English and Spanish.
  • Capacity to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Experience in higher education setting
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Formal education in the areas of Marketing/Comm or equivalent experiences
  • Familiarity with CRMs and CMSs
