Land Surveyor - Crew Chief

Thomas & Hutton has an opening for an experienced Survey Crew Chief to join our Survey Department in Nashville, TN.

Survey Crew Chiefs are responsible for directing crews of two or more people in successfully completing a variety of field assignments. It is a supervisory position that requires high impact decisions and directing the work of others while continuing to perform the same technical duties as other crew members. The work can be both mentally and physically challenging and must be performed in a wide range of conditions.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Survey Crew Chief required.
  • Experience with boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys required.
  • Experience with GNSS Base & Rover, Virtual Reference Stations, and Total Stations required.
  • Experience with Carlson SurvCE a plus.
  • Experience with UAVs and/or LiDAR a plus.

Skills:

  • This position will require driving and a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to identify boundary evidence and topographic features in the field and in imagery.
  • Strong math skills including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Working knowledge of the compass, data collectors, levels, GNSS, and total stations.
  • Working knowledge of RTK, RTN, and Static GNSS campaigns.
  • Working knowledge of processes related to boundary and construction stake-out.
  • Working knowledge of processes related to closing a traverse.
  • Written and verbal communication skills – clear handwriting and sketching.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work outdoors with the likelihood of encountering insects, snakes, wildlife, etc.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work in a wide range of temperatures.
  • Ability to climb hills and walk long distances.
  • Ability to traverse widely varying types of terrain.
  • Ability to function in both rural and urban environments.
  • Ability to lift and carry surveying equipment, instruments, supplies, and tools.
  • Ability to personally interact with people in the field, in meeting rooms, and in the office.
