The Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania is driven by the mission to deepen and broaden the understanding of Jewish history, texts, cultures, ideas, and experiences. The research it supports spans all periods of Jewish history, from distant antiquity through to the present day; it reaches into every part of the globe where Jews have lived, and it is grounded in a wide range of disciplines and approaches. Over the decades, after supporting hundreds of scholars and untold numbers of discoveries and publications (including a book series and the journal the Jewish Quarterly Review), it has earned a reputation as the nation's preeminent research center in the study of Jewish history and culture.

Responsibilities:


The Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania supports research on Jewish civilization in all its historical and cultural manifestations, and is a model for institutions of its kind. The Katz Center hosts an international fellowship program that brings to the university scholars from around the world; serves as a catalyst for other forms of interdisciplinary scholarly collaboration; supports the development of early career scholars; and runs a series of programs meant to share the fruits of research with a broader public.



Reporting to the Associate Director, but receiving work from the Director and Director of Public Programs, the Communications Coordinator plays a key role in connecting the Katz Center to its various constituencies. The Center is seeking an enthusiastic people person with the skills to communicate across various media, who can work independently and as part of a team, and who is detailed-oriented and well-organized. This position combines administrative responsibilities with the creation of visual and written content and will execute the Katz Center's overall communications strategy.



The person in this role will: Coordinate all aspects of publicizing the Center and its programs and events, including printed and online materials, advertising, and social media, according to an integrated Center-wide plan; Produce, edit, and maintain news and other content for the Center's website and e-newsletter; Proactively manage social media, working to expand the Center's reach among key constituencies; Manage mass communications including composition of email blasts and maintenance of the Center's database of contacts and Constant Contact account; Ensure that all Center communications comply with established visual identity; Creatively and energetically contribute to efforts to better serve our core constituencies and reach new audiences; Assist at events and on other special projects as needed.




Qualifications:




  • Bachelor's degree and 3 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.




  • Demonstrated experience with graphic design, including knowledge of the Adobe Suite, especially InDesign, and Photoshop.




  • Excellent writing and proofreading competency; meticulous attention to detail and organizational skills; facility with popular and emerging social media platforms and communications technologies; ability to work independently and with a team: strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work with a diverse group of faculty and staff, and vendors as needed; independent time management: ability to work with short deadlines and successfully manage long term planning; experience in an academic institution or arts/culture non-profit setting desirable; Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (mandatory), Microsoft Office suite (mandatory); plus knowledge of or ability to learn quickly: FileMaker Pro, MyEmma, HTML, and Drupal.
