General Description / Primary Purpose:



The Department of Art, Art History, and Design at the University of North Florida invites applications for a full-time tenure-track assistant professor position in Graphic Design and Digital Media to begin in August of 2024.




The University of North Florida's (UNF) Department of Art, Art History, and Design is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The department has seven major areas of undergraduate study: Art History, Ceramics, Graphic Design and Digital Media, Painting/Drawing, Printmaking, Photography, and Sculpture. The Department expands learning opportunities for students and provides professional enrichment for faculty and staff through a partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown Jacksonville, a cultural institute of UNF. In addition, the Department maintains an extensive permanent teaching collection of approximately 500 works.




The Graphic Design and Digital Media (GDDM) program is a competitive, selective-admissions BFA program of study that prepares students for professional practice in visual communication. The curriculum emphasizes design process and principles, technical skills and production methods, and research-driven problem-solving that considers social impact as well as commercial potential. Coursework focuses on print, branding, typographic design, user and interaction design, and screen-based experiences.

Teaching:
Course load is a 3/3 with an opportunity to teach 6-week summer sessions. A first- and fourth-year course release is provided for developing a research agenda for promotion and tenure.
Research/Scholarship/Creative Activity: Faculty are required to develop a research/scholarship and creative activity agenda, as outlined in the departmental guidelines.
Service: Faculty are expected to serve on department and university committees; local, national, or international boards of professional organizations; and/or in some other capacity that benefits the community.

Faculty Position Required Qualifications:

Candidates must have an MFA or terminal degree in Graphic Design or a related field from an accredited institution at the time of appointment in August 2024.


Candidates must demonstrate experience in teaching, research, or practice in user experience (UX) design and research, including web design, app design, agile methodologies, and human-centered design methods. Candidate portfolios should display breadth and depth of UX design, process, and outcomes. The ability to prototype using industry-standard software, such as Figma and Adobe Creative Cloud, is essential. Proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is preferred. Additionally, candidates should be outstanding in typography and foundational design principles and methods. Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills are integral.

Required Licensure or Certification:

In addition to an MFA from an accredited institution in Graphic Design, Digital Media, or a related field the ideal candidate will have two or more years of college-level teaching experience or graphic design industry work experience in UI/UX, web, mobile, interaction, or emerging media design.
