Description

Who We Are

IREX is a global development and education organization. We strive for a more just, prosperous, and inclusive world—where individuals reach their full potential, governments serve their people, and communities thrive. With a projected annual portfolio of more than $100 million and more than 600 staff worldwide, we work with partners in more than 100 countries in four areas essential to progress: cultivating leaders, empowering youth, strengthening institutions, and increasing access to quality education and information.

The Senior Director (SD) will support the Vice President (VP) of Global Operations and Management (GOM) in providing strategic and operational leadership for IREX, a rapidly growing international NGO with 750+ employees operating in 100 countries and an annual turnover of over $170M.

This position will serve as a key resource to the VP of GOM, helping to develop a clear vision of IREX’s current and future operational needs and the systems required to meet those needs; spearheading new operational initiatives; incubating new competencies; and stepping-in for the VP of GOM to address operational issues that demand immediate attention when necessary.

Are you the next member of our team?

Your Background & Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 18+ years of experience
  • A minimum of two years working on an international development program while living in the country where the program is being implemented.
  • Background in international development including program and operational management, security and risk management; technology, data and digital tools; asset, project and policy management.
  • Exceptionally strong experience developing and implementing successful change management campaigns on a global scale for an organization with a geographically dispersed workforce.
  • A proven track record of excellent leadership and communication skills. Including leading and effectively communicating with cross-cultural teams.
  • Must demonstrate valid proof of unrestricted authorization to work in the United States.

Your Daily Tasks

  • Plan, implement and lead change management strategies for specific initiatives in close collaboration with other functional teams. Establish evidence-based methods for measuring the impact of each change management campaign.
  • Establish and initially manage a risk management function within GOM. At an appropriate time in future, migrate the function to a yet unnamed full-time risk manager.
  • Contribute to the development of the IREX 2030 strategy, specifically by helping to define, anticipate, and plan for IREX’s operational requirements as it continues to grow. Aligns operational imperatives with program requirements and strategic priorities.
  • Support the planning and execution of a new ERP selection, configuration and implementation initiative.
  • The exchange of timely, accessible and relevant information between GOM and all other program teams, country offices and functional groups is critical to the quality of the operational and management support GOM provides to the entire organization.
  • In collaboration with GOM unit leaders and staff, and other functional groups, regularly create, review and disseminate internal communications designed to inform; solicit employee input; promote employee participation and feedback; facilitate collaboration; promote employee well-being; strengthen IREX’s culture and values; provide training; and celebrate successes.
  • Establish evidence-based methods for measuring the efficacy of internal communications, and for using the data to learn and iterate.
  • Establish trust networks and safe systems for soliciting and receiving formal and informal stakeholder feedback about operational performance and its impact on people, programs, partners and strategic priorities.
  • Coordinate GOM advise to new business and proposal teams regarding go/no go bid decisions in a constructive and collaborative manner to optimize IREX’s growth while adhering to IREX’s duty of care practices and principles.
  • Provide inputs to business development teams during proposal phase regarding optimal operational requirements, best practices and associated costs in collaboration with GOM’s unit leaders.
  • Accountable for ensuring GOM runs within budget while it continues to proactively upgrade and refine its structure, systems, policies, procedures, and practices to support IREX’s growth trajectory and market changes.
  • Participate in the annual budget preparation cycle using evidence-based costs in collaboration with GOM’s units, to include not only ongoing GOM costs but also reflecting the operationalization of GOM’s annual plan, special initiatives and other related items as appropriate.
  • Provide coaching, mentorship, and support to GOM staff. Foster an environment of innovation, continuous learning and professional growth and development.
  • Lead and inspire people and teams within GOM and across the organization. Foster a positive and productive work environment through collaboration, consultative and inclusive decision-making. Skillfully de-conflict tensions when they arise and promote a safe space for debate and discussion.
  • Represent the VP of GOM in discussions and decision-making fora to address immediate and near-term operational issues. In collaboration with stakeholders across IREX, solve problems, address challenges and find and deploy innovative solutions.
  • Engage in the continuous improvement of GOM to enable IREX to grow and meet shifting market demands while retaining its people, culture, core values and high standards for quality.
  • Other duties as assigned.
