POSITION DETAILS

Part-time, benefited position; 48 hours per two week pay period; day shift; start and end times dependent upon department needs; on-call rotation with a 20 minute response time so if unable to get from home to hospital in less than 20 minutes during on call times, this employee would need to stay on site.

JOB SUMMARY

Provides professional nursing assessment and initiates nursing care to clients having surgery or outpatient procedures. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patients of all age groups. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development through the life span, possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s needs in relation to age and to provide the care needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures. Prioritizes needs of patient and the department.

MAJOR JOB FUNCTION

  1. Complies with certification/recertification requirements of the position and attends continuing education course to remain current in the field.
  2. Teaches and supervises the proper performance of nursing acts that have been delegated to others and monitors nursing care of other health care team members. Teaches patient and families what to expect in the surgery process.
  3. Promotes patient/client education and involves the patient and significant others in implementation of health goals. Promotes, advocates and recommends changes in the patient care delivery system.
  4. Performs activities related to the nursing role.
  1. Participates in the orientation and education of others. Greets, encourages and accepts new personnel on the unit and in the hospital.
  2. Provides for unit/hospital in-services or education programs.
  3. Attends 50% of staff meetings. Reads and initials minutes of staff meetings when not in attendance.
  4. Participates in mandatory in-services.
  1. Maintains safe and attractive environment using current hospital environmental policies and guidelines.
  2. Performs all nursing functions by the application of professional nursing principles.
  1. Collaborates with health team members in providing a comprehensive plan of care.
  2. Accountable for clinical practice and leadership in practice.
  3. Acts as a role model, resource, mentor and teacher.
  4. Communicates and acts as a liaison between the patient, family, anesthesia and surgeon.
  5. Acts as a patient advocate.
  1. Cooperatively participates as a member of the nursing department.
  1. Participates as required to cover regular, vacation, holiday and on-call hours and adapts personal schedule to accommodate patient care needs.
  2. Willingly identifies problems within the work environment and participates in the problem solving process.
  3. Effectively adjusts to varying work demands where circumstances and priorities are changing.
  4. Participates in floating to other nursing work environments.
  5. Demonstrates the ability to evaluate suggestions and criticism objectively.
  1. Performs duties of a circulator in the OR.
  2. Performs Phase 1 recovery for the surgical patient.
  3. Performs conscious sedation for endoscopy and other ambulatory surgery patients.
  4. Demonstrates proficiency in regards to the computer documentation of patient cares and any other related computerized patient information/documentation.
  5. Able to use the computer for data entry, order entry and PI studies.
  6. Performs all other duties as assigned.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  2. Current licensure to permit to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Wisconsin.
  3. Current certification or eligibility to become BLS, ACLS (required within one year of hire) and PALS (required within one year of hire) certified.
  4. Prior Critical Care, Emergency Care, ambulatory surgery or endoscopy experience preferred.
  5. CNOR certification desired.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

  1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  2. Excellent human relation skills as demonstrated by the ability to interface positively with all customers and employees.
  3. Must acquire the knowledge and maintain established competency levels to perform essential professional nursing practice.
  4. Must have proficient computer skills with the ability to operate within a Windows environment.
  5. Must have the ability to work with frequent interruptions, under stress, with minimal supervision, and to exercise initiative and judgment in analyzing, organizing, planning, prioritizing, scheduling and coordinating work with others.
  6. Needs to possess as high level of intelligence, integrity, sense of responsibility and ability to comprehend and analyze details.
  7. Knowledge of theory, principles, techniques and practice of professional nursing; of scientific principles and nursing research; of preparation, administration, and actions of medications; of treatments and medical procedures; of counseling and teaching techniques; of medical equipment as it relates to patient care.
  8. Ability to operate and handle many kinds of complex equipment.
  9. Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for infant through geriatric patients.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  1. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, and talk and hear.
  2. The Registered Nurse is frequently required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. The RN is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch, and smell.
  3. The RN must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  4. Good hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound.
  5. Visual acuity is needed to assess color changes, to verify accuracy of written materials and to administer and accurately prepare medications.
