Carilion Children's is seeking a Resident in Counseling, completion of internship and graduation from a CACREP or CORE accredited program required, in a pediatric outpatient setting with an LPC supervisor.

Clinical opportunities include triage and assessment, onsite behavioral counseling in a number of modalities, onsite telemedicine counseling, and supervision toward licensure. QMHP-C or QMHP-A preferred but not required.

The Resident in Counseling provides therapeutic services to patients preschool age through young adulthood. Services include triage and assessment, intake assessment and diagnosis, individual outpatient counseling. Works as a member of the multidisciplinary team. This is a fast paced environment that requires flexibility and collaboration with multiple stakeholders including providers, parents, and outside agencies.

Assesses patient's need for non-medical services within the parameters of the treatment plan.

  • Provides initial contact and triage assessment for incoming pediatric mental health referrals.
  • Provides evidence based individual therapy.
  • Develops and maintains therapeutic relationships with patients in the individual, family and group setting.
  • Coordinates the patient's treatment with the multidisciplinary treatment team, patient's family, referral source and aftercare provider. Makes appropriate discharge plans.
  • Records patient data in the medical record to include the psychosocial assessment, progress notes and discharge plans.
  • Works cooperatively with other members of the clinical treatment team and other pediatric providers.
  • Observes and documents data reflective of the patients' status, interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age and specific needs, and provides the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.

What We Require:


Education: Masters in Social Work, Counseling or related field required. Completion of internship and graduation from a CACREP or CORE accredited program required.

Experience: One to three years of related experience required.

License/ Certification: QMHP-C or QMHP-A preferred but not required.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Effective interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills required. Must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for position.
