Job Description:

The Ann Romney Center for Neurologic Diseases (ARCND) and the Chitnis-Translational Neuroimmunology Research Center including the CLIMB Study Biorepository affiliated with the Department of Neurology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, are pioneering neuroimmunological research in multiple sclerosis (MS). The Research lab manager will a Masters degree (or higher) in the Biological Sciences, and have at least 7 years of experience as a laboratory research manager. This position works under the general direction of the Principal Investigator (PI) and Director of the CLIMB Study and the Translational Neuroimmunology Center (TNRC), Dr. Tanuja Chitnis. The lab manager performs full scope of management responsibilities in a research laboratory, including fiscal/budget management, supervision of staff activities, inventory management, and coordination of IRB protocols. The lab manager will also have an active role in the Biorepository, preparing and storing samples from the CLIMB Study and independently performing highly sophisticated experiments. The senior lab manager will participate in the design of experimental protocols with the PI and will interpret experimental results, and participate in grant, manuscript, and abstract preparation in collaboration with the PI. The senior lab manager will train postdoctoral fellows, technicians, and students in specific laboratory techniques.



Qualifications

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


1. Supervises operation of the laboratory, including overseeing laboratory funds, supplies, resources, and personnel.
2. Manages all technician lab personnel, including hiring, firing, performance evaluation, disciplinary action, orientation, and training.
3. Trains Biorepository lab members in specialized lab techniques.
4. Responsible for financial management of research lab, in conjunction with the research finance manager. Develops budgets, analyzes trends, produces reports.
5. Responsible for the coordination of all regulatory and compliance activities for the lab.
6. Submits IRB documentation and protocols pertaining to laboratory activities.
7. Responsible for the maintenance and reporting of any issues with equipment or major lab resources.
8. Supervises the conduct of peripheral blood mononuclear cell isolation, RNA/DNA isolation, and other biosample storage techniques.
9. Trains staff in specialized lab techniques including DGE-RNA sequencing, single cell RNA sequencing, flow cytometry, FACS sorting, PCR and Western blots
10. Develops SOPs for clinical trial sample processing.
11. Develops SOPs for clinical trial sample analysis.
12. Coordinates collaborative studies with other laboratories/groups involving multicenter sample collection, processing and analysis.
13. Conducts independent experiments and participates and/or leads manuscript preparation.
14. Works with database manager to develop and improve sample bar coding and tracking system for biosamples.
15. Carries out independent research projects, which involve the execution of highly, sophisticated techniques including flow cytometry in autoimmune disorders.
16. Interprets experiment results in conference with other researchers.
17. Reports on work in progress at weekly meetings and ad hoc seminars.
18. Contributes to scientific literature and present results at institutional and external academic meetings.
19. Participation in grant proposal preparation.
20. All other duties as assigned.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Responsible for supervising lab personnel including hiring, evaluating, and disciplining. Will orient and train new staff members. The lab manager is responsible for the ongoing supervision of lab personnel, in conjunction with the PI.


QUALIFICATIONS:
MS or PhD required


Minimum of 7 years of progressively more responsible research work experience. Prior supervisory experience required.

8. Analytical skills and ability to logically sequence experiments to maximize research.
9. Must possess aptitude for budget and finance management management.
10. High level of computer literacy.
