Job Description:

Services as an apprentice position assisting plumbers as necessary in an apprentice capacity. Tasks are routine and require some organizational skills.


Duties



  • Assists skilled workers in accomplishing duties in the Plumbing Shop. 

  • Keeps skilled workers supplied with tools and materials; holds heavy materials. 

  • Assists skilled workers and learns to service and install gas fired appliances and related piping such as forced air furnaces, water heaters, and kitchen appliances according to accepted safety standards and codes. 

  • Helps skilled workers in servicing and repairing water pumps, fire hydrants, building fire protection sprinkler systems, etc. 

  • Logs in tasks completed and materials used. 

  • Assists in maintaining the supply inventory.

  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Required Education: High School Diploma or GED


Required Experience: None


Skills:



  • Effective verbal and written communication

  • Ability to use tools and equipment needed to complete tasks

  • Read and understand basic materials

  • Perform basic math

  • Perform simple record and time keeping


Certifications:



  • Valid Driver's License


Departmental Preferences:



  • Some previous plumbing experience

  • Apprentice card or ability to obtain within two months of employment


Working Conditions:



  • Physical: Climbing ladders and stairs, digging with shovels, sharpshooters, and/or posthole diggers. Frequent and repeated bending, stooping, and kneeling. Crawling under structures and through tunnels. Working with arms extended above head. Lying down and working beneath ground level. Lifting and carrying loads in excess of 50lbs. Operating heavy equipment, jackhammers, and concrete saws. Excessive stress on the back, arms, and shoulders. 

  • Environmental: Working in muddy ditches and excavations. Working in extreme weather conditions. Working with steam-heated and other large equipment. Some overtime required, including nights, weekends, and holidays. May be designated as an "essential position" during emergency closures. May be required to remain on campus overnight during weather or other emergencies.
