The Doe Run Company is seeking a Safety Specialist, under general supervision, to assist in developing, implementation and monitoring Doe Run’s safety programs. including compliance with federal, state and local safety and health regulations, safety inspections, accident investigations and safety training. This position is located at our Buick Resource Recycling Division in Boss, MO.

 

Education & Experience


  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • 2 years of industrial safety experience. 

  • Bachelor's degree in safety or related field preferred. 

  • Safety certified trainer preferred.

  • Valid, current driver’s license.

  • Current CPR Certification, preferred. 

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 


  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures

  • Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.

  • Ability to effectively communicate safety instructions and concerns to employees and management.

 

Responsibilities:


  • Train employees to identify and manage safety hazards, and understand safety rules and requirements through classroom sessions, safety meetings and individualized counseling.

  • Advise and provide guidance to site leaders and employees regarding mandatory health and safety standards and safety protocols and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance as mandated by local, state, and federal agencies, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Missouri Mine and Cave Safety Division.

  • Conduct routine and follow-up safety inspections of work areas for regulatory non-compliance and safety hazards and document any identified issues; provide guidance on appropriate resolutions and recommend disciplinary action, if necessary.

  • Respond to emergency situations and conduct accident investigations wherein root causes are identified, and resolutions are recommended.

  • Initiate reporting to internal workers' compensation personnel for work-related injuries and illnesses. 

  • Escort federal and state inspectors and assist with follow-up on inspector recommendations and feedback.

  • Develop & implement training and training plans in alignment with OSHA and/or MSHA requirements.

  • Perform routine health sampling, prepare safety reports, and gather required health and safety information.

  • Act as subject matter expert for safety compliance for assigned location(s) utilizing independent decision-making skills, and safety leadership.  Analyze accident and incident reports for trends; make recommendations for correcting unsafe conditions and actions.

  • Complete tasks in a safe and environmentally compliant manner by following EHS (Environmental, health, and safety) policies, procedures, and best practices; support and assist peers in working in safe, compliant manner; report unsafe acts or conditions, incidents, and deviations; and provide feedback to support continuous improvement in EHS performance. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 


Work Environment & Physical Requirements:


  • Regularly required to use computer, phone, radio, and non-powered hand tools, occasionally required to use powered hand tools and personnel carriers.

  • Regularly required to work in outdoor weather. Regularly required to work in underground mining conditions (SEMO), Regularly required to wear PPE, including but not limited to a respirator, eye protection, hearing protection, and foot protection. Occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. Occasionally required to work in confined spaces, wet, humid conditions (non-weather). Rarely exposed to vibration work at heights with fall protection. Occasionally exposed to loud noise. Frequently, work is performed in a standard office setting.

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time, talk and hear; occasionally required to use repetitive motion and reach with hands/arms. Requires clarity of vision and three-dimensional vision.

  • Occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.
