Position Summary


  • There are multiple positions available.
  • Territory for these roles are to be determined.

Handles portfolio underwriting by managing specialty coverage and a large, complex book of business, evaluating and selecting risks, which the company will insure within level of authority. Evaluates current and future business to verify acceptability and adequate rates. Assists supervisor in supporting and promoting corporate objectives and strategic growth plan. Leads, mentors and trains underwriter team members.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reviews specialty coverage and larger, complex and specialized risks with Agents and less experienced underwriters to determine acceptability, pricing and policy modifications.

Acts as a resource and subject matter expert within the section and department. Assists in training and sharing product knowledge with less knowledgeable staff. Ensures underwriting work meets established standards. Actively promotes and supports corporate, divisional and department goals and objectives, with emphasis on underwriting profitability and quality growth.

Maintains working relationships with Agents, ERIE sales force and other departments through phone contact and email. Assists with the planning and conducting of training seminars. Makes field trips and attends Agent meetings as directed in order to establish rapport with Agents and develop knowledge of territory.

Reviews risks and claim reports to determine appropriate action, including coverage modifications or termination for large or complex books of business. Advises supervisor or department manager and Agent of necessary underwriting action to retain, modify or terminate risks.

Trains and mentors underwriters and assistants as needed. Advises less experienced underwriters regarding complex accounts as required. Plans, communicates and achieves agreement on roles and responsibilities for resources needed for or involved in underwriting the territory. Develops and provides training needed to increase underwriting capabilities.

Evaluates more complex underwriting applications and policy change requests that are outside ERIE's guidelines or best practices for both personal and commercial lines. Provides consultative advice to Agents regarding risk selection and frontline writing. Analyzes related reports and insurance scores to determine acceptability. Analyzes account experience, related reports, rate adequacy and acceptability of occupancy and/or operation in order to prepare and evaluate change request, and renewal contracts. Ensures that contract complies with legal statutes and corporate underwriting guidelines.

Participates in the evaluation of Agents. Maintains Agent files for periodic review with management and/or branch staff. Advises management of issues or concerns.

Communicates with Agents and staff on a regular basis to answer questions and discuss risks. Also communicates with branch staff regarding Agent issues or concerns. Consults with management to discuss issues or concerns.

Participates in insurance-related education and develops knowledge of current industry trends. Maintains an understanding of existing laws and regulations, emerging technologies, and competitor actions that can impact our customers, our product offering, or our pricing.

Qualifications

Minimum education and experience requirements

Bachelor's degree required and five years related underwriting experience at the company or agency level with an in-depth knowledge of all related business lines; or
Associates degree and seven years portfolio underwriting required; or
High school diploma or GED, and nine years portfolio underwriting required; or
High school diploma or GED, and successful completion of CPCU, CIC or PLCS designation required

Mastery of underwriting guidelines and techniques, demonstrated through proven strong underwriting performance required.
Occasional travel required.
Successful completion of the General Insurance program (INS 21, 22, 23) preferred.
Successful completion of two parts of the following programs: CPCU, CIC, PLCS, AAI, API, AIC, AU or ARM preferred.
Mentoring and leadership experience preferred.
