 WHO YOU ARE?

You will provide support and contribute to tasks and initiatives that help fulfil AGU's mission and strategic plans while gaining experience in editorial operations and the development of new scientific publishing initiatives. To do so, we are looking for people who can think both in the big picture and be able to focus on the details by being proactive, organized, and exercise good time management skills.

You will manage peer review and publication operations of AGU’s scientific journals and support various development projects for the Community Science Exchange (communitysci.org). You will work directly with publishing stakeholders (authors, editors, reviews, and other partners) to manage and solve submission and production related issues.

WHAT YOU WILL DO?

Community Science Exchange (CSE) operations and projects (50%)


  • Support editorial operations of the journal Community Science in GEMS, which includes attending editorial board calls and team meetings, engaging editors and collaborating on solutions.

  • Support and develop outreach efforts to the Community Science Exchange’s several partner organizations.

  • Support and develop social media content and campaigns for the Community Science Exchange and additional content promotion for the journal Community Science.

  • Participate in other projects that support CSE goals.

Journal operations (50%)


  • Manage work in GEMS (AGU journals submission and peer review platform) for assigned journals to ensure that submitted manuscripts are processed in accordance with journal expectations in terms of timeliness, ethical standards, and quality while maintaining strong, positive relationships with the editors, authors, and reviewers.

  • Provide support to editors, authors, and reviewers. This includes GEMS assistance, advice on procedures and policy, troubleshooting production and publication related issues, coordinating editorial board calls, etc.

  • Provide support during peak volume times, potentially managing other journals during these times.

  • Pay $17.00 per hour.

  • Full Time/ Hourly, Non-Exempt, 3-month Summer 2024 Internship, remote in most US states. We are currently NOT hiring in WA, OR or CA.
