JOB SUMMARY:

The Sr. Accountant is responsible for performing accounting work including project management and account reconciliations; and performs related work as required.




DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:


·        
Performs various day-to-day accounting activities.


·        
Assists with project analyses related to capital and developer projects, including project management, fixed asset database maintenance including additions, acquisitions, disposals, and transfers (Utilize PowerPlan)


·        
Set up projects in the fixed asset system to receive charges.


·        
Upon completion of the capital project, organize and classify charges into various asset accounts for proper asset useful lives and depreciation according to NARUC.


·        
Liaison with multi-departments for document support and project inquiries.


·        
Assist in
preparing variance analyses and preparing account reconciliations.


·        
Prepares journal entries and assists in month-end close process to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.


·        
Posts, balances, and reconciles the general ledger and subsidiary accounts.


·        
Prepares, reconciles, reviews and analyzes financial records, statements, and reports as required. 


·        
Performs other periodic duties and responsibilities including special projects and administrative duties as assigned.



 
Other Duties  


·        
Responsible for providing information required by Auditors and SJW Accounting staff  


·        
Manage assigned operations to achieve goals within available resources 


·        
Perform other related accounting work as assigned  


·        
Occasional after hours and weekend duties may be required 



 

REQUIRED SKILLS / ABILITIES:


·        
Knowledge in the application of generally accepted accounting principles; Sarbanes-Oxley internal control compliance.


·        
Knowledge of accounting information systems.


·        
Fixed assets experience is desirable.


·        
Ability to manage multiple projects, and to keep track of accounting and financial data. 


·        
Working knowledge of general accounting.


·        
Ability to review, analyze and reconcile journals and legal documents.


·        
Ensure compliance with applicable financial reporting and accounting regulations.


·        
Organize work, set priorities, and meet critical deadlines.


·        
Utilize a personal computer and current applications of accounting, word processing and spreadsheet software programs. 


·        
Good written and oral communication skills.




EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


·        
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in accounting or other related field. 


·        
Four to seven years of professional level accounting experience. 


·        
Experience in Microsoft Excel and ERP financial accounting systems and QuickBooks, and PowerPlan are desirable. Regulated utility experience preferred. 


 


 


ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


Works approximately 100% of time in a controlled-temperature office requiring the ability to:

Sit for extended periods of time in front of a computer screen


·        
Use finger dexterity and hand strength to perform simple grasping and fine manipulation


·        
Use a telephone and operate a computer and other office equipment on a daily basis


·        
Speak and hear in person and on the phone


·        
See sufficiently to perform assignments


·        
Intermittently twist to reach equipment or supplies


·        
Frequently lift or carry boxes of files, equipment or records weighing up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 40 pounds
