ASRT, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients. The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of ASRT, Inc. and will be assigned to the Division of Scientific Resources (DSR), National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic and Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), at the CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA.
SCOPE OF WORK
The Laboratory Technician II will provide support to the Division of Scientific Resources (DSR), Biotechnology Core Facility Branch (BCFB).
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Deactivates and extracts specimens in the Core Operations Outbreak Response and Services Laboratory (COORS) for scientific studies such as diagnostic, research and surveillance
Collaborates with internal and external public health Point of Contacts (POCs) to ensure accuracy of scientific metadata and streamline specimen routing for various scientific studies
Utilizes ELIMS to manage samples and report results
Assesses select agent tier 1 microorganisms via membrane filtration and pour plate methodologies. Followed by analysis, interpterion and reporting of subsequent data
Bacillus Anthracis gamma phage production under Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) conditions
Perform bridging studies for specimen extraction methods of various biological agents
Conducts training sessions for laboratory personnel to ensure proficiency in laboratory techniques, testing and analysis (technical and document)
Ensures training materials are up-to-date and in compliance with quality management systems (QMS) guidelines and other with regulatory and accreditation agencies
Quality control testing of various PCR reagents prior to final product release
Reagent qualification
Conducts monthly PCR background and calibration.
MPOX Validation (manual DNA extraction and PCR)
Development protocols and conduct training
Equipment maintenance and validation
Water sample testing
Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in, biology, chemistry, or environmental laboratory science, or
Ten (10) or more years of similar experience in a laboratory setting.
Required:
BSL2 or BSL2-enhanced level laboratory experience
Knowledge of laboratory and safety regulations including CLIA, ISO, and/or OSHA standards
Experience aiding in the detection and characterization of unknown bacterial species
Ability to rapidly identify and characterize biological and/or other agents that cause several diseases
Experience working with biological organisms and awareness of their handling and storage
Experience working with and adapting/modifying SOPs
Experience working with inventory management and material shipping
Experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for the preparation of memos and reports
Desirable:
Previous experience working in a similar role
Previous experience with "chain of custody" materials and transfers
Experience modifying methods based upon evaluation of research results
Demonstrated skills and experience writing project reports, research protocols and manuscripts
Specific detailed knowledge of quality systems and regulatory requirements, handling of clinical specimens, and aseptic techniques
Language Skills:
The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
