Job Description
The Steel Quality Assurance Auditor will evaluate various quality characteristics of rail steel & Macro Etch of carbon steel and/or steel alloys in steel mills. They will conduct quality assurance audits which require the witnessing and supervision of laboratory tests performed on steel samples at the supplier's rolling mill. SGS will dispatch the Steel Quality Assurance Auditor to the rolling mill as required by the client (requires 30%-50% travel). When not auditing/traveling, this role will support the needs of the various departments of the Melrose Park Metallurgical Testing Laboratory.
Supervise the preparation and testing methods used by the supplier's QC laboratory (50% of work)
Assist with Health & Safety Activities as required (30% of work)
Witness the testing of the selected samples as specified by the client
Review all test data generated for compliance against specified industry specifications and/or client requirements
Ensure that all equipment and devices used during testing are performing and calibrated correctly
Compile and submit an audit report to the client
Requires 30% to 50% of travel and overnight stays. Audits will be conducted over a series of consecutive days onsite, typically 4 to 5 days, including travel
Support the operational needs (technician level) of the various departments of the Melrose Park Metallurgical Testing Laboratory when not onsite auditing
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Associate degree or higher in a related field
3+ years of related experience and/or training in mechanical testing of metals: tensile, hardness, and impact testing
Experience in metallographic and macro preparation of metals, microstructural and macro etch evaluations of carbon steel and/or steel alloys
Travel
Requires 30% to 50% of travel and overnight stays. Audits will be conducted over a series of consecutive days onsite, typically 4 to 5 days, including travel
Licenses/ Certifications
Valid driver's license due to travel requirements

$27.00 - $30.00/hour (based on experience) paid bi-weekly

Equipment
Onsite audits operate in an industrial manufacturing environment; steel mill and does not require the operation of any laboratory testing equipment at the supplier's rolling mill. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones.
When working in the Melrose Park Metallurgical Testing Laboratory, duties and tasks may involve the use of the following equipment and machines; bandsaw, lathes, mills, surface grinder, tensile tester, hardness tester, charpy impact tester, combustion analyzer, OES/ICP systems, metallographic polishers, microscopes and salt-spray/humidity chambers.
