Job Title: Director, Systems Design Verification

Department: Systems Engineering COE

FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Overview:

Insulet is looking for an enthusiastic, team-focused individual to lead a department that tests great products for the diabetes-care industry and obtain experience in one of the fastest growing and most exciting medical device companies in the greater Boston area!

The Director of Systems Design Verification will be integral in the technical design and development of Insulet's products by supporting all phases of the design verification process from system integration through formal design verification and commercial release. The person in this position will be directing System Design Verification department, allocating resources across a dynamic portfolio, engaging with program and R&D leadership in the planning and coordination of test activities, optimizing processes and tooling to achieve optimal efficiency and product quality, and maintaining the highest possible technical standards for System Verification. This person will be accountable for defining, staffing, and executing the high-level system design verification strategy for each project and orchestration of their interactions from a System Verification perspective.

The position will report to the Vice President, Systems Engineering, within the Systems Engineering Center of Excellence located at Insulet's Headquarters in Acton, MA. The position may be hybrid based in Acton Insulet office with occasional travel to San Diego and Tiajuana Insulet offices.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, equip, and direct a test engineering department responsible for the System Design Verification responsible to confirm the safety, efficacy, and quality of Insulet's products.

  • Establish and optimize high level system verification test strategy together with cross-functional leadership team to the scope of individual development programs.

  • Introduce and implement best-in-class test methodologies and tooling to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of the System Design Verification strategy.

  • Balance test resources across a broad and dynamic program portfolio to support the execution of the portfolio plan on time and with quality. Engage external partners as required to supplement team capacity during periods of greater portfolio demand.

  • Develop and grow a team of test professionals through excellence in hiring, training, and staff development.

  • Establish strategic departmental objectives aligned with broader R&D and Insulet objectives to challenge and grow team capability while delivering on organizational priorities.

  • Engage with peer leaders across the organization to develop a coordinated, cross-functional approach to the integration, verification, and release of Insulet products.

Preferred Skills and Competencies:


  • Team Leadership: A proven track recording both building and leading large self-directed teams and departments. Includes development, tracking, and achievement of team objectives.

  • Time and schedule management: Experience balancing resources in a multi-program environment. Facility with adapting test strategy dynamically to respond to portfolio dynamics.

  • Budgeting: Experience managing a large team budget including material, capital equipment, internal resources, and externally contracted resources.

  • Collaboration: Experience working closely across departmental boundaries to achieve a coordinated, cross-functional approach to testing.

  • Process Innovation: Demonstrated ability to evolve processes to incorporate best-in-class agile methodologies to improve efficiency and quality while maintaining full compliance.

  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communicator, ability to communicate with both team members and stakeholders throughout project life cycles.

Education and Training:


  • B.S. or higher degree in an Engineering or related field

  • 15 years of experience in the Medical Device Industry

  • M.S. in engineering, related field or engineering management considered a plus.

  • Strong understanding of Design Controls and their implication for V&V testing.

Physical Requirements (if applicable):


  • Some travel expected as necessary to support verification and testing expected to be less than 10% if local to Acton, MA.

  • If individual is remote expect approximately 20% travel to Acton, MA to work directly with the leadership team and engage in person with team members.

NOTE: This position is eligible for hybrid working arrangements (requires on-site work from an Insulet office at least 1x/week; may work remotely other days). #LI-Hybrid

Additional Information:
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $161,200.00 - $242,200.00. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position in the primary work location in the US. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
