Position Summary:

The Veiseh Lab in the Rice University Bioengineering department has an opening for a research technician position. Our lab utilizes molecular engineering and cellular and molecular biology in combination with advanced nano, micro, and macro biomaterial fabrication techniques, to develop platforms of cell therapy devices tailored for in vivo biochemical sensing and delivery of biological therapeutics.

An ideal candidate will have a strong interest in cell engineering and biomaterials with a desire to work on clinically translatable cell therapies. Experimental skills in mammalian cell culture, mouse models, and chemical synthesis are preferred. The candidate is expected to have strong communication and organizational skills, and to work with team members on advancing projects in a diverse and collaborative environment.

This position is funded by a grant, soft and/or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of funding.

Minimum Requirements:


  • HS Diploma or equivalent
  • 2+ years of related experience in research

    • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted



Skills:

  • Ability to perform basic laboratory tasks independently
  • Basic laboratory assays such as ELISA
  • Basic chemical synthesis methods
  • Basic math and research skills and the ability to conduct basic data analysis
  • Highly organized with good attention to detail
  • Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication
  • Enthusiasm to learn new skills
  • Enthusiasm to work with others on collaborative projects
  • Experience with (or ability to learn) mammalian cell culture


Preferences:

  • Experience working with mouse models
  • Experience with (or ability to learn) biomaterial fabrication
  • Experience with (or ability to learn) small animal models
  • Experience with sterile technique and tissue culture preferred
  • Experience with (or ability to learn) genetic engineering, molecular cloning, molecular biology assays, bacterial culture


Essential Functions:

  • Performs cell culture and assists in cell characterization
  • Performs chemical synthesis and biomaterial fabrication
  • Assists in conducting research and experiments
  • Collects and tracks basic data and maintains a laboratory notebook
  • Assists in the laboratory day-to-day technical operations including promoting safety, maintaining equipment, and preparing reagents
  • Prepares procurement requests and orders materials and supplies, manages sample and stock database, sets up and manages experiments and maintains results for publications
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
