Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Batch Operations Area Supervisor to join our Ashland Inc., ISP Technologies, Inc. business at our Texas City, Texas manufacturing plant. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the safety and health function. This position will report to the site manager.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Provide intense focus to ensure key activities are clearly understood by operators then executed according to procedures.  Provide coaching as needed.

  • Work with area operators to optimize unit performance to anticipate unit issues then proactively resolve.

  • Participate in review and update of operating instructions to ensure procedure matches practice.

  • Ensure operator training stays on schedule, monitor key objectives, and identify areas of improvement.

  • Assist in the training of new employees in the unit.  Ensure new employees are progressing as planned; then determine when employee is qualified to operate the area independently.

  • Personally recognize, reward, and provide feedback for successful efforts of employees to increase productivity, reduce costs and improve work processes, then report via appropriate channels.

  • Assess, and if needed, correct employee performance focusing on safety, environmental, quality and production initiatives and/or shortfalls in conjunction with the Plant Rules.

  • Delegate tasks to operations employees, then follow up to ensure completion.

  • Assist with the coordination of unit turnarounds and planned maintenance activities.

  • Ensure good communication between departments and proactively prepare equipment for maintenance activities in advance.

  • Support implementation of programs and procedures to optimize Production while continually improving processes.   Recognize the importance of product quality.

  • Participate in Safety and Environmental initiatives:  PHAs, MOCs, safety work orders, 5S, and other continuous improvement opportunities.  

  • Work with Operations and Operations Managers to establish annual goals and objectives for each of the production areas.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned for ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the department.

  • Review daily lab data and SQC data then make process adjustments to correct out-of-range parameters.

  • Assist in process troubleshooting.

  • First point of contact for unit operational issues.

  • Ability to respond to calls on nights and weekends.

  • Ensure cGMP compliance.

  • Assist in Near Miss, Root Cause Analysis and Accident Investigations.

  • Monitor Work Orders.

  • Issue Hot Work Permits.

  • Encourage the use of ECPs; produce ECPs as needed.

  • Improve shift change process.

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:


  • Internal candidates:  minimum of 5 years batch area process operations experience.

  • Minimum 10 years chemical plant manufacturing experience as chemical process operator, supervisor, or engineer. 

  • Well-versed in chemical process manufacturing, plant safety rules and regulations, Process Safety Management (PSM), current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGPM), environmental compliance standards, site quality processes, and budgetary cost control. 

  • Organized, an effective communicator, and ability to interface well with employees at all levels.

  • Valid driver’s license to operate plant vehicles.  

  • Ability to respond appropriately during site emergencies as directed by Site Emergency Manager. 

  • Capable of evacuating the manufacturing process areas in a timely manner should an emergency arise. 

  • Ability to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment if required to work or visit within the manufacturing process area.  This may include hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, or other equipment as required by the nature of task and location work is performed.  Other physical activities may include walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting to 25 lbs., or reaching; depends on the work activity required.  Work is performed in an office/plant environment with frequent trips to operating units to assess equipment or processes, perform inspections and/or collect data.  May be required to operate Company vehicle on Company business.  Confined space entry may be required.  Training required to perform the job properly may require this position to travel within Texas and around the United States of America.

  • Candidate must also be able to 1) identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management, including Corporate, 2) develop and foster a positive work environment at all levels, and 3) resolve conflicts through problem resolution skills.

  • Candidate must also have ability to identify quality improvement opportunities and formulate action plans for implementation, requiring exceptional work planning and problem-solving skills.

  • Previous supervisory experience in a union environment.
