GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:


The Research Technician is a full-time role with a primary responsibility to participate and assist in ongoing research studies under the supervision of a Principal Investigator in the Endocrine Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. The MGH Endocrine Unit is a leader in investigating, diagnosing, and treating disorders of bone and mineral metabolism, thyroid diseases and general endocrine conditions. The Peptide/Protein Research laboratory is involved with the synthesis of peptides to study protein/protein interactions.



PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



Responsibilities comprise, but are not limited to:


  • Synthesis, purification and analysis of peptides using automated instruments.

  • Operates moderately complex equipment including peptide synthesizers, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, HPLCs and mass spectrometers.

  • Responsible for ordering common laboratory reagents and other supplies and for assuring that supply levels in the lab are adequate.

  • Prepares materials for shipping.

  • Techniques used will include Synthesis of peptides using solid-phase Fmoc chemistry approaches (manual and automatic), purification using preparative HPLCs and analysis using analytical HPLCs and mass spectrometry.

  • Organizes and accurately maintains written records of experimental procedures and data collection.

  • Participates in upkeep of lab, performs basic maintenance on laboratory equipment (cleans, disassembles, stores, replaces worn parts) and reports equipment requiring advanced repair.

  • Participates in and presents data at lab meetings.

  • Interacts well with others, assists in training laboratory personnel in lab techniques and procedures that have been acquired.


SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Experience with Synthesis, purification and analysis of peptides using automated instruments is preferred.

  • Ability to build upon basic techniques, learning or helping to develop new ones as necessary, to conduct the research project.

  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Basic proficiency in Word, Power point, Excel, and Internet searches is required.






Qualifications

EDUCATION:



  • BS in Biochemistry or Chemistry is required. MS preferred.



WORKING CONDITIONS:



  • Duties will be performed in a research laboratory in the Charles Navy Yard with occasional travel to the MGH main campus.

  • Work will be conducted over a 40-hour workweek.
