Salary Range: $40,916-$65,874     FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Essential Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Serves and a leads and field training officer for less experience animal control officers; confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; confers with co-workers, assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise; assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment; and assists with supervision of co-workers by reporting employee problems and providing input on disciplinary action and employee performance evaluations.

Serves as a team leader the team on a shift in absence of the supervisor; distributes work assignments organizes tasks in order to complete assigned work; and monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work.

Enforces the provisions of federal, state, and local codes and ordinances applicable to animal activities; completes pending/follow up calls that are distributed during the morning roll-call meetings, and takes work territory and call assignments; and reviews previous cases with Officers.

Completes and/or processes a variety of forms, logs, reports, and other required documents; and reviews daily activity reports (DAR) to check case progress and possible follow-ups.

Investigates complaints and reports of bites, cruelty, abuse, stray/nuisance, wildlife, livestock, exotic pets, and neglect or abandonment of animals by citizens and other providers of animal care; obtains evidentiary information to appear in court to testify as witness; and conducts interviews with complainant and possible suspect.

Patrols the county for stray, injured, and/or sick animals.

Assists veterinary staff with examinations of animals brought into the shelter.

Handles documentation for reported animal bites (stray animal, identified pet, or wildlife), ensuring the report is complete and in compliance with state and local codes and ordinances; ensures all involved parties in animal bite occurrence have been interviewed; and determine the source of the animal bite (stray animal, identified pet, or wildlife).

Serves as a liaison between DeKalb County Management and animal bite victims, veterinarian clinics, hospitals, state laboratory, 911 emergency dispatchers, etc.; provides data to DeKalb County Management to support results of the report; takes appropriate course of action determined by the source of the animal bite; and submits animal (if found) to the State Laboratory for testing to determine if the animal has the rabies virus.

Performs data entry of animal bite occurrences; enters each animal bite occurrence in the Pet Point database, and the Health Departments SENDSS database; sends reclaim letters to owners; sends victims a notification letter once quarantine is completed; and sends lab specimen letters to victims that encountered wildlife animals.

Provides customer service by answering various inquiries from animal bite victims, State Laboratory representatives, veterinary clinic staff, 911 emergency dispatchers, animal owners, etc.

Issues warnings/citations to animal owners found in violation of animal regulations; and coordinates site visits with Animal Control officers for delivery of citations or subpoena when owners fail to comply with the quarantine process.

Performs Trap Coordinator Officer duties; receives Trap Request Form and user fee from DeKalb County residents; coordinates the process of delivering and retrieving trap with resident; transports all caught animals to animal shelter; and enters trap request into Pet Point database and inventory spreadsheet (ASE).

Utilizes and maintains various equipment and tools associated with animal control activities; conducts daily inspections to check equipment.

Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws and regulations and attends in-service training

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED required; two years of experience equivalent to Senior Animal Control officer; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
