Job Description:

The Bariatric Care Coordinator is a member of the MBS team who under the direct supervision of the Nursing Leadership and the MBS nurse manager/director assists in ensuring efficient management of the Bariatric program and schedules. Functions as the primary coordinator for the bariatric program, elective surgical procedures, nutritional class scheduling, outpatient testing, and hospital visits. Performs all clerical functions in the department and inputs data into appropriate computer systems. The Bariatric Care Coordinator communicates with nursing, nutritionist, radiology, laboratory, cardiology, respiratory, preop and OR staff for day to day coordinating of care. Troubleshoots and resolves issues as they arise within the department. Functions as a role model and resource to staff and patients.Foothill Regional Medical Center is a fully accredited acute care hospital, licensed for 177 beds-120 beds for general acute care, 15 intensive care beds and 42 pediatric sub-acute beds. Our pediatric sub-acute unit, just one of six in California, serves patients from throughout the state. We care for patients up to 21 years of age who need long-term sub-acute care including ventilator care and nutritional support.Minimum Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.

Minimum Experience: One (1) year of experience as a Bariatric Care Coordinator, Unit Secretary, OR Schedule Coordinating or Administrative Support in an acute care facility required. Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job. Excellent Communication and Organizational Skills. EMR knowledge and application for program. Must be able to effectively read, write, and communicate in English. Understanding of basic medical terminology. Bilingual skills to communicate effectively with patients and families preferred.

Req. Certification/Licensure: AHA Basic Life Support required. Hospital Fire and Life Safety Card (Hollywood and Van Nuys Employees only required).


  • Works with Bariatric patients for scheduling preop testing exams, nutritional appointments, and coordinate classes for pre and post bariatric surgeries. Logs and collects information about upcoming bariatric surgeries and post-surgery information. Collects all elective surgical/procedures results by receiving information from physician/office staff regarding a) type of case, b) required date, c) patient information. Organizes bariatric case information week by week for upcoming surgeries and take the information to preop nursing unit. Coordinates all inpatient and outpatient room set up for the cases scheduled. Coordinates with appropriate departments to ensure all applicable equipment, instruments and rooms are available. Communicates special bariatric equipment, instruments, and supply requests in writing to house supervisor or Director of OR. Communicates requests to the Radiology Department for Bariatric care testing. Reviews and updates surgery schedule daily with MBS team. Works in collaboration with the Bariatric Nurse Manager, Bariatric Registered Dietician, MBS team members and MBS director. Takes meeting notes for the team meetings.

  • Provides administrative support for the bariatric department including answering calls of bariatric patients for outpatient and inpatient care needs, obtains and updates necessary booking information from person requesting surgical updates. Organizes, manages, and stores records in proper order. Checks each patient record for completeness and then enter charges in the computer system. Obtains all missing patient information from the physician's office for the preop nursing unit. Bariatric Care Coordinator maintaining patient confidentiality in the process. Communicates with admitting staff for Bariatric patient care needs. Keeps patient and employee information and all correspondence confidential. Communicates electronically with surgeon offices, logging updates for bariatric care coordination.

  • Collaboratively communicates any changes affecting the next day surgery schedule to nurse in charge and supply needs with nursing staff, materials coordinator, vendor, and physicians. Communicates messages to appropriate personnel. Generates patient changes by gathering and checking information, changes, documenting information and distributing changes to the appropriate departments. Keeps department Director informed of changes, discrepancies, or equipment/supply problems.

  • Actively engages in caring behaviors, taking conscious ownership for work and takes a proactive, deliberate, and thoughtful actions regarding work activities. Demonstrates appropriate use of independent judgement and decision making. Answers the telephone in a professional manner and demonstrates excellent customer service at all times. Ensures patients privacy and dignity at all times.
