Job Description:

The Histology Technician is utilized in preclinical laboratory work activities related to the grossing, processing, embedding, and cutting of ex vivo tissue samples for the assessment of the output efficacy of medical devices.  This individual will be involved in planning and executing statistically driven experiments to determine biological effects of ultrasound through bench top synthetic materials and ex vivo tissue studies.  This position requires mechanical aptitude, visual inspection, use of microscopes, documentation and recording of data as well as some quality assurance sampling, testing, and measuring skills using various precise measuring equipment. 


Responsibilities




  • Pre-clinical Laboratory Science:



    • Collection, tabulation, and analysis of pre-clinical testing data of Ulthera's current and future product lines. 

    • Precisely and accurately performs a variety of routine and specialized histology techniques and procedures. Follows standard operating procedures for the grossing of small specimens, quality control, and quality assurance.

    • Creating, expanding, or implementing advanced histological techniques and experimental setups to match the technical needs of Ultherapy-based projects & experiments.

    • Develop benchtop metrics for therapy and imaging system performance. 

    • Identifies, prepares, cuts, stains, and preserves specimens for examination




  • Laboratory Organization:



    • Maintains all pathology laboratory equipment including preventative maintenance (PM) and inform Lab Manager of any equipment problems. Coordinate with Lab Manager to schedule service.

    • Document all PM, repairs, on-site service, and off-site technical support and maintain service records with strong attention to detail in all written communications.




  • Design Controls Documentation:



    • Writing and revising laboratory work instructions and SOPs 




  • Other Duties as assigned:



    • Must be safety minded, prepared to read, understand, and follow safety requirements




Technical & Functional Skills



  • Meets schedules, priority demands, and deadlines. Demonstrates flexibility and versatility in coordinating tasks. Takes on special projects.

  • Must be capable of operating Histology instrumentation and making sound decisions under stressful conditions and time constraints. Conduct routine histology techniques including tissue processing, trimming of tissues of diverse origin, embedding, paraffin microtomy and cryo-sectioning of frozen samples.

  • Experience coordinating tests in excised and/or live tissue models.

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to support and follow the directions and efforts identified by engineering mentors.

  • Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Good Documentation Practices (GDP)


Minimum Qualifications



  • Accredited high school diploma (and 60 semester hours of post-high school education including a minimum of 24 hours or science courses to be eligible for high-complexity testing.

  • Histologic Technician training at a certified training program/healthcare careers college or equivalent experience meeting the high complexity requirement.

  • One year of laboratory experience at a hospital or private laboratory.

  • Must be action-oriented with demonstrated customer focus and problem-solving skills and a focus on technical excellence, customer responsiveness and creative thinking.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Capable of performing various staining methods, including but not limited to: H&E, NADH-diphorase and Verhoeff's Van Gieson staining
