Position Description

Primary purpose:
The primary purpose of a Head Gauger is to perform all the same duties as a Gauger, such as the duties necessary to receive, measure, store and ship petroleum products. These duties include, but are not limited to, the operation and/or monitoring of Terminal equipment such as pumps, tanks, pipelines, valves, meter provers, pipeline samplers, vapor incinerators, and water treatment systems. Additionally, the Head Gauger is responsible for overseeing the other Gaugers and Relief Gaugers on shift and for ensuring all scheduling issues, communication issues, and customer issues are addressed and/or communicated to management.

Essential duties and responsibilities:


  • Provide general oversight of shift operations and communicate all concerns/issues to management in a timely manner.

  • Perform pipeline line-ups by opening and/or closing valves. Valves may be motor operated or manual.

  • Starts, stops, and monitors pumping equipment used to transport petroleum products through company of third party pipelines. Ensures pumps are operated within their proper range of operation and performs minor maintenance checks to prevent damage while in operation.

  • Monitor operation of waste water treatment systems, vapor incinerators, truck loading and unloading racks, and tank water draw systems.

  • Monitor terminal for safety and environmental compliance.

  • Monitor intra terminal transfers of petroleum products and perform all required tasks for safe and efficient operations.

  • Responds to operating emergencies as necessary.

  • Perform tasks necessary to load/unload tank trucks and rail tank cars in accordance with DOT regulations and Kinder Morgan policies.

  • Perform tasks necessary to conduct vessel and barge transfer operations, including vessel tie-up and release, moving product hoses, bolting hoses to flanges, draining hoses, and unbolting at completion of transfer.

  • Measure the volume of petroleum product in tankage by climbing to the top of the tank and measuring the height of product in the tank using a gauge tape, obtaining a sample of the product, obtaining the temperature of the product, measuring the API gravity of the sample, and performing the necessary mathematical calculations.

  • Perform meter calibrations and / or input data to correctly measure product by meters.

  • Obtain samples of pipeline movements either manually or by using automatic sampling devices.

  • Perform simple laboratory testing of petroleum products.

  • Perform minor maintenance of terminal equipment. Items include adjusting valve packing, oiling machinery, greasing valves, cleaning and painting.

  • Perform clerical tasks necessary to document terminal operations and provide other departments with inventory and billing information.

  • Perform housekeeping functions at terminal-sweeping, pulling weeds, cleaning racks, and cleaning boom and other clean-up activities as required.

  • Deploying/retrieving of hard boom, absorbent boom and spill pads from powerboat and skiff.

  • Operation of various terminal vehicles including trucks and forklifts.

  • Any other task as may be assigned by Management.


Position Requirements

Minimum requirements: Education:


  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • A general understanding of pipeline operations, pumping systems, petroleum products and liquid measurements is a plus.

  • A minimum of three years experience as a Gauger or Relief Gauger.

  • Proven ability to consistently carry out all Gauger responsibilities at a high level of accuracy and dependability.

  • Proven ability to regularly troubleshoot and resolve most operational issues that occur on the shift.

  • Routinely exhibits professionalism when representing the Company and deals respectfully with co-workers, management, customers and outside vendors and agencies.

Experience / Specific Knowledge:
Certification, licenses, registrations:

  • A satisfactory driving record as determined by the Company and a current, valid State driver's license are required.

  • Satisfactorily obtaining or already possessing, and maintaining a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card is a condition of employment. TWIC card is obtained by submitting an application, background check, and having fingerprints taken.

  • If the employee is subject to license or certification requirements or training as stipulated by local, state or federal agencies or the Company, now or in the future, compliance is required under this job description.

  • Ability to read, comprehend and respond to simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.

  • Well-balanced interpersonal skills and strong verbal and written communications skills are required.

Physical demands:

  • Employee must be physically capable of completing and satisfying all training requirements as stipulated by local, state or federal agencies and/or Company Policy.

  • Exposure to smells and fumes associated with refined petroleum products.

  • Work is performed outside in varying and sometimes extreme weather situations.

  • Perform physical labor in a variety of extreme climactic conditions, including walking, bending, stooping, climbing tanks, digging, lifting and general manual labor.

Working Conditions:

  • 12 hour rotating shifts (including holidays, weekends).

  • Position subject to 24-hour call-out, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • The majority of work time will be spent outdoors and the incumbent must be physically fit and capable of working in a variety of weather conditions, including desert hot and cold temperatures, humidity, dryness, etc.

  • Job requires extensive walking on a daily basis.

  • Incumbent will be required, on a routine basis, to bend and stoop, as well as light to medium lifting of pumps and equipment. Heavy lifting will be required at times.

  • Incumbents must be able to gauge and climb tanks with 50 to 80 steps on a routine basis.

  • Overtime required and extended work hours in cases of emergencies.

Preferred education, experience, certifications, competencies, skills, and abilities:
Above the minimum requirement; not required but advantageous in this position:

  • Hydraulics experience desired

  • Prior experience requiring mechanical aptitude and skill is a plus

  • Basic knowledge of cathodic protection

  • Knowledge of piping, valves and pressures

  • Knowledge of pipeline operations

  • Experience with storage tank operations, including inspections, alarms and sampling

  • Experience with light maintenance (mechanical, electric, electronic)

Compensation:
Pay range is $43.27 per hour. Job level and pay commensurate with experience and skill set.
