Job Summary
Reports to the Department Chair of History of Art & Architecture, a mid-sized interdisciplinary department focused on cross-regional, transnational, and transcultural modes of art, art media, and art production from antiquity to contemporary art, and the Administrative Dean for the Arts and Humanities Division, responsible for the overall strategic management of the administrative, financial, and staff operations of the department. Works with the chair, faculty and staff to create a healthy inclusive and positive work environment for all members of the community. Oversees support for the academic operations of the department, as well as support for the CAMLab, Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture, and the undergraduate architecture track jointly managed between the department and the Harvard Design School.
Position Description
Directs departmental staff in the management of graduate and undergraduate programs, academic and faculty support, office management, and financial administration for the department. Directly supervises a departmental staff of seven direct reports, who collectively support complex departmental academic business needs necessary to the 23+ faculty, 74+ graduate students, and 56+ undergraduate concentrators.
In consultation with FAS HR, manages human resources for staff, including recruiting, performance management, compensation, staff relations, and training.
Works with contacts in the Physical Resources Office for all building-related issues, including repairs, maintenance, and refurbishing as needed.
In collaboration with the Department Chair, sets strategic objectives and allocates resources to support these objectives. Works with FAS Finance to develop the $5.6M departmental budget, including oversight for the CAM Lab and Aga Khan Program. Responsible for directing team to monitor spending, and oversees payroll and sponsored research activities.
Develops and implements policies and procedures for effective administration of the department. Serves as a primary source of policy information for faculty and staff. Works with the Department Chair and faculty committees on policy and planning matters and visiting committee activities.
Collaborates with the Division of the Arts and Humanities and the Academic Dean of the Division to ensure that Department administrative procedures are in line with the Department’s core mission and university policies.
Acts as liaison to and works closely with FAS and University offices. Handles special projects for the Department Chair and performs all other duties as required.
Attends and functions as a contributing member of Department committees and external committees within FAS.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required. Must possess at least seven years of progressively responsible administrative management experience, including staff supervision and financial management, in a diverse academic or research environment.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Ability to work as a member of a team in cooperation with a diverse constituency, from administrative staff to students and faculty. Must have excellent operational, analytical, written and oral communication skills as well as strong leadership, interpersonal, and negotiation skills. Must be experienced working with constituencies that include faculty, staff, and students, as well as international guests and scholars. Must be comfortable with technology and possess strong computer skills.

Work Format Details
This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
