Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the supervision of an assigned supervisor. Operates and drives various types of trucks, one (1) ton and up, including stake-type dump trucks, and mechanical equipment associated with performing the job. Loads and unloads materials, tools, and equipment unto trucks. May connect hoses and sprinkler system for turf and grass irrigation and use various equipment such as shovel, rakes, spades and other tools such as chain saw in designated area. May plant, trim and spray bedding plants, trees, and shrubs. Performs routine maintenance such as, lubricating, fueling and cleaning equipment. Operates tractor using specific attachments to till, cultivate, and grade turf areas to apply prescribed amounts of lime, fertilizer, insecticide, and fungicide in assigned area. May perform a variety of manual duties as needed in maintaining assigned buildings and/or grounds such as bagged trash disposal and street clean-up which may include picking up dead animals, broken glass, tree limbs, and other debris. May assists in mowing and cutting turf and grass areas using hand mower and power mower. May lay asphalt on walking trails, parking lots and roadways in assigned work area.

OTHER FUNCTION:

1. Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires ability to operate assigned equipment and to engage and disengage attachments. Requires ability to climb onto equipment. Must be able to handle various hand tools. Requires bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, and lifting trash and debris (approx. 50 lbs.). Requires the ability to traverse uneven ground and operate a motor vehicle.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed outdoors in sometimes adverse weather conditions. May be exposed to odors, noise dust, pollen, fumes and traffic. Frequently drives trucks to various work sites throughout the city. Weekend work shifts may be required.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to read, write, and understand written and verbal instructions. Must possess and maintain a valid Class "B" Tennessee (or equivalent out-of-state) Commercial Driver's License and must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules as a condition of continued employment. Working experience operating and driving a variety of trucks preferred. May be required to complete a battery of tests as deemed appropriate by Human Resources to evaluate competencies in operating related equipment.
