About the Team

The Mail Science team consists of Research Scientists and Research Engineers who pioneer and provide solutions and technologies in machine learning, classification, recommendation, personalization, information extraction, and information retrieval. Our team's work has a direct impact on Yahoo Mail, the second largest email provider in the US, and an array of other Yahoo products, and is seen and used by hundreds of millions of active users worldwide. The team has vast knowledge and expertise in turning huge amounts of user data into knowledge and applications using state-of-the-art techniques in machine learning and data science. It provides intellectual leadership and scientific acumen to the design and development of future products and services, and often facilitates Yahoo's academic collaboration by publishing its results in worldwide conferences.

Responsibilities

As a Research Scientist in the Mail Science team, you will apply and advance state-of-the-art machine learning techniques in areas such as classification, recommendation, personalization, information extraction, and information retrieval.

Leveraging your scientific expertise, technical skills, and relevant data, you will:


  • Identify, scope, and formulate new problems

  • Design metrics and experiments to analyze problems and measure results

  • Review state-of-the-art approaches, explore new ones, propose appropriate solutions

  • Prototype and evaluate effective solutions based on agreed-upon goals and metrics

  • Work and communicate effectively with engineering partners to put research results into action

  • Provide thought leadership to guide the direction of products and services

  • Act as tech lead for small teams of scientists and engineers

You will also:


  • Generate intellectual property with patent applications and publications at relevant forums

  • Stay current on state-of-the-art research and emerging technologies in related disciplines

  • Maintain world-class credentials through publications, collaborations, and service to the research community

Requirements


  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Statistics, Applied Math or related field

  • Minimum of 6 years experience in industry in large-scale information extraction, classification, information retrieval, natural language processing, or related field

  • Expertise in Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Large Language Models, Natural Language Processing, or Web Mining

  • Solid programming skills in high-level languages such as Python, Java, Scala or similar

  • Experience in directing collaborative research, as evidenced through solid publications and previous leadership roles

  • Strong communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills

The compensation for this position ranges from $160,965.00 - $349,885.00/yr and will vary depending on factors such as your location, skills and experience. The compensation package may also include incentive compensation opportunities in the form of discretionary annual bonus or commissions, in addition to equity incentives.
