Primary Role

This intern experience will introduce the successful candidate to the exciting career opportunities in the water industry. The successful candidate will learn firsthand how water treatment facilities operate and the importance of providing continuous, high quality water to the community. This role will work closely with and report directly to the Manager of Operations position.

Key Accountabilities


  • Assist with local safety initiatives, including confined space, lock out tag out, near misses and coordination of local safety activities.

  • Assist with regulatory compliance tracking related to disinfection-by-products, lead service line replacement program, and internal American Water requirements.

  • Assist with creation of Operations Manuals and SOPs for three surface water treatment plants and 20 ground water stations.

  • Assist with the summer Production demand management program.

Knowledge/Skills


  • Intimate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Strong demonstrated communications skills.

Experience/Education

The ideal candidate for this position is self-motivated, has a strong technical background and desire to work in the water industry. This person will work in an office setting; however, will travel to multiple treatment facilities and offices. Candidates must be 18 years of age or older, have a high school degree or equivalent and be pursuing a postsecondary education in the fields of Engineering or environmental sciences preferred.

Work Environment

This will be a part-time position that will run from May to August and will not include weekend, night or holiday hours. This will include approximately 30% field work, to include driving company vehicle and 70% indoor office environment. This role will average about 15-20 hours (2-3 days) per week and will pay $20.00 per hour.
