Job Description:

We are looking for a Manager, Lab Systems & Technology to join our team and oversee the development and maintenance of our laboratory information and data analytics platforms and customer-facing scientific applications. In this role, you will be responsible for leading/collaborating with a team of IT professionals and scientists to ensure our lab systems and technologies are reliable, safe, and efficiently meeting the needs of the scientific community.  You will also be expected to facilitate the creation of a strategic plan/roadmap, lead the implementation of new systems and upgrades to meet the plan, and oversee the day-to-day support of the New England Biolabs (NEB) user community.

As the Manager of Lab Systems & Technology, reporting directly to the Director of IT, you will need to have a strong background in IT management in a laboratory or research setting. You should also have excellent communication and leadership skills, as well as a keen interest in innovation and scientific discovery. You will need to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including bench scientists, bioinformaticians, vendors, IT Operations, and senior management. You should also be able to handle multiple projects and prioritize tasks according to deadlines and resources. 

Primary Responsibilities:


  • Lead the strategic vision, execution, maintenance, and quality assurance for all lab applications/technologies within NEB’s portfolio.


  • Proactively seek ways to support scientific processes and serve as a partner and resource to our scientists on technical options and best practices.


  • Work with key scientific staff to develop application roadmaps and oversee the prioritization of project requests.


  • Oversee Governance process for Lab applications/technologies.


  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key customers at all levels to understand their needs in order to recommend appropriate solutions.


  • Work closely with IT Operations on security, network, and other infrastructure initiatives affecting lab systems. 


  • Direct projects and be responsible for overall implementation and execution of projects.


  • Identify and advocate for staff resource needs and assign individual responsibilities.


  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation of processes, procedures, system, and change-control.


  • Effectively apply software development methodology and enforce project standards.


  • Develop, motivate, and direct staff to create a highly productive team environment and provide global application support.


Required Qualifications and Experience: 


  • Master’s degree in a scientific discipline and 8 years science/bench/lab technology experience.


  • Minimum 3 years’ experience managing a team and/or program and project management.


  • Experience with lab technologies. 


  • Capable of acting as a thought partner and providing oversight on both technical and project management fronts.


  • Possess strong management and teamwork skills.


  • Experience in business process re-engineering and process improvement.


  • Possess ability to express complex technical concepts in terms understandable to the business.


  • Knowledge of Benchling ELN, high-throughput instrumentation and general biotechnology is preferred.


  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
