Position Summary

Develops, produces, and distributes training materials to support the release of new vehicles and systems via formal New Technology Training (NTT) classes. Continually reviews, maintains, improves, and updates existing core curriculum courses to ensure that both e-learning modules and Instructor-Led Training (ILT) courses reflect and cover the latest technologies and changes from Subaru. Develops new e-learning modules and ILTs as needed to support both NTT and core technology modules. Researches emerging automotive technologies, electronic simulation techniques, delivery techniques, and virtual/augmented reality technologies to keep training content and delivery methods current.

Major Responsibilities


  • Plans and conducts regular electronic and/or in-person communications with other Subaru of America (SOA) departments, Subaru Corporation (SBR), SOA partners, suppliers, and vendors to obtain information needed to develop technical courses. Partners with the business by identifying relevant stakeholders, determining which information will need to be communicated via training, and creating strategy on how to best communicate the subject matter. Directs the work of vendors and maintains accountability for vendors' work product and performance.
  • Designs, develops, and implements new training curriculum. Maintains and edits existing curriculum using technical knowledge obtained through observations and communications with subject matter experts (SMEs). Establishes project plans for curriculum changes and new curriculum development to include determining required resources; developing and managing project schedules; defining scope, objectives, and deliverables; and reviewing progress and adjusting tasks as necessary. Utilizes automotive technical knowledge to appropriately develop content and determine if curriculum is current. Provides well-supported recommendations and collaborates with senior management, based on subject matter knowledge and analysis, regarding technical training lab equipment and build vs. buy and integration decisions for third-party content.
  • Plans and hosts Train the Trainer (TTT) events for Field Service Training Managers (FSTMs) on newly developed curriculum, equipment, and simulators. Provides recommendations on which FSTMs will attend, plans event space, and develops schedule and strategy for how to educate FSTMs on each curriculums' subject matter. Manages the implementation of new learning programs.
  • Supports the development of FSTMs to the level of Subject Matter Expert (SME) for both SOA and its partners by demonstrating proper class facilitation and provides recommendations on the development of FSTM skill sets where needed to respective Regional Training Managers.
  • Travels to Area Training Centers (ATCs) to evaluate instructor-led training materials delivered by FSTMs as needed. Observes how the material is being received by both instructor and student and determines assessment criteria to evaluate the quality of training materials. Develops project plan for curriculum changes if training materials need to be improved.
  • Meets with Product Planning and Product Management departments and reviews all technical documents from Subaru Academy and the Subaru Aftersales Information Service (SAIS) to forecast technical training needs.
  • Supports the Senior Technical Training Developer with the design, logistics, and implementation of the Subaru U.S. National Technician Competition.

Required Skills and Personal Qualifications

  • Ability to handle high stress levels at times to meet deadlines for NTT and core course module development and release. This requires coordinating and scheduling with SOA personnel, Subaru Academy, development vendors, tool vendors, and global distributors.
  • Ability to work in a shop/lab environment with automotive components, vehicles, simulators, and tools for purposes of understanding precise technical diagnostic operation and subsequent training program development.
  • Advanced understanding of automotive related systems including LAN/CAN, engines, transmissions, fuel management, brake, steering, suspension, AC & climate control systems, ADAS Systems, hybrid and EV drive systems, and oscilloscope functions and usage.
  • Proficient in the application of instructional design techniques for both Instructor-Led Training (ILT) and E-Learning curriculum.
  • Strong organization, presentation, facilitation, and communication skills.
  • Strong MS Office/360 skills.

Education/Experience Requirements: Four year degree with six (6) to eight (8) years of relevant experience

Certification Requirements: ASE certification in A1 through A8 automotive areas as well as L1, L3, L4 and G1 or be willing and able to obtain these certifications. Must have 609 refrigerant handling and EV awareness and safety certificates.

Compensation: The recruiting base salary range for this full-time position is $86700 - $110000 / year. Within the range, individual pay is determined by factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
