Job Description:

SUMMARY:

 

The Fleet Director is responsible for all aspects of vehicle and equipment management (including planning) which includes oversight and direction for all fleet repair and maintenance programs, technical standards and specification development, regulatory, contractual and policy compliance, supplier quality management, fuel management programs, and management of Fleet systems. The Director will manage asset productivity, processes, and the development/governance of fleet metrics, and provide best in class administrative practices. The Director will focus on fleet efficiency, continue to develop our vehicle replacement/deployment strategy and will manage all external providers (OEM’s, Up-Fitters, R&M and leasing vendors). The Director/Fleet Group will also provide high quality support to our field operations that focuses on cost control, customer service, and operational efficiency, while ensuring that Field Operations are fully compliant with our Fleet Management programs/policies.

Fleet Size and financial scope:

Fleet Size: 1,000 plus

Repair & Maintenance Annual Budget: $20mm

Vehicle Fuel Annual Budget: $18mm

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Develop and implement the Fleet management philosophy, strategy and standards.

  • Manage the Fleet Management Services vendor (ARI/Holman) and the approvals process.

  • Develop and manage the vehicle and equipment preventative maintenance (PM) and repair strategies to maximize fleet availability and reliability (reduce downtime) and minimize life-cycle cost. This includes achieving annual preventative maintenance targets and compliance.

  • Ensure compliance by Field Operations of the daily fleet management protocols and policies.

  • Develop and execute the vehicle investment strategy to repair, refurbish and replace vehicles with the objectives of obtaining the lowest lifecycle cost and highest fleet reliability.

  • Manage the vehicle order, up-fitting and delivery process to meet expected timelines and budgets.

  • Manage the disposition of the retired fleet efficiently and in a manner that maximizes the overall vehicle sales proceeds.

  • Manage the titling and licensing of newly acquired vehicles as well as the IFTA and IRP programs.

  • Manage the development of the annual company budget for all vehicle costs (operating and capital) and partner with Finance to explain variances on a monthly basis.

  • Manage the company fleet fueling program; including the fleet fuel card program(s), negotiating discounts, and monitoring compliance to company policy.

  • Establish and communicate fleet metrics and reliability measurements and take a leadership role in the continuous improvement.

  • Manage/Improve the vehicle utilization process to insure the effective use of all applicable assets.

  • Develop vehicle and equipment specifications to meet customer needs and safety and compliance regulations.

  • Develop and manage the relationships with the vehicle and equipment manufacturers and up-fitters.

  • Lead and manage the fleet due diligence tasks for all acquisitions.

  • Leverage available telematics information to address maintenance needs and improve reliability as well as reduce idling and fuel consumption.

  • Management and development of the Fleet Operations staff.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITY REQUIREMENTS

 


  • 10-15+ years in vehicle fleet management

  • 5-10 years in management and or a leadership role

  • Strong leadership skills

  • High customer service priority and sense of urgency

  • Solid mechanical knowledge of diesel engines, Class 3-8 trucks, tanker trucks and trailers

  • Solid knowledge of vacuum pump systems preferred

  • 4 Year degree in related field preferred

  • Must be able to solve problems, resolve differences, and prioritize

  • Able to manage multiple tasks resulting in positive solutions

  • Computer skills; competent in MS Office software (Word and Excel)
