Job Description:

Federal Signal is currently hiring for a Director of Manufacturing based out of its University Park, IL manufacturing facility. This position is responsible for directing the manufacturing operations for the Safety and Security Systems Group-US. 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Establishes manufacturing policies in the areas of Lean Manufacturing, material usage, shipping and receiving, capacity planning, production scheduling, quality, efficiency, safety, and employee relations.

  • Structures and guides site operational leadership to develop and execute standards for safety, quality, cost, and delivery.

  • Defines the required process improvement tools (80/20 analysis, pull systems, standard work, visual controls, improvement blitz, etc.) and implements processes to deploy these skills across all departments.

  • Establishes a lean enterprise organizational structure and staffing plan that aligns with the Group’s requirements in support of customer demand.

  • Works with UP Management Team to implement the staffing plan to recruit and develop the required talent and participates in candidate interviews and the annual employee review process to support the staffing plan.

  • Provides a team-based work environment that provides structure and opportunity for its members.

  • Provides input on the Annual Operating Plan and the Capital Expenditure Plan.

  • Ensures compliance with the company’s Standard Policies and Procedures and oversees conformance to ISO9001 quality standards.

  • Active participation in all labor contract negotiations and disputes.

  • Supports the New Product Development Process by assuring the smooth transition of new products into the manufacturing process.

  • Participates in talent reviews and job grading.

  • Administers the quarterly gain sharing program and sets annual stretch goals.

  • Provides JDE/IT support involving manufacturing processes.

Position Requirements:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business Administration or related field. Masters degree preferred.

  • 10+ years of operations management experience within a union environment preferred.

  • Technical skills in Lean Manufacturing techniques, Kaizen Process Improvement, materials management and production methodologies

  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills

  • Organizational development and change management

  • A demonstrated ability to lead people and get results through others

  • The ability to organize and manage multiple priorities

  • Ability to think ahead and plan over a 5-year future time span
