Job Description:

Pay Range: $66,132 - $106,473

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Manages, directs, and evaluates assigned staff; develops and oversees employee work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control; compiles and reviews timesheets; approves/processes employee concerns and problems and counsels or disciplines as appropriate; assists with or completes employee performance appraisals; directs work; acts as a liaison between employees and senior management; and trains staff in operations, policies, and procedures.

Organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; prioritizes and schedules work activities in order to meet objectives; ensures that subordinates have the proper resources needed to complete the assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff to assist with complex/problem situations and provide technical expertise; provides progress and activity reports to senior management; and assists with the revision of procedure manuals as appropriate.

Ensures compliance with building codes; oversees the site inspection of commercial and residential structures and sites for compliance with applicable erosion, building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and land development codes and standards; interprets code specifications; and reviews plans, specifications and blueprints with inspectors, contractors, engineers, architects and owners.

Interacts with a variety of individuals regarding code compliance; responds to complex questions, concerns, and interpretations of ordinances, laws, rules, and regulations, and related issues; represents the Department in meeting and on committees; and testifies in court cases and before Zoning Board of Appeals.

Performs related duties in support of inspection activities; prepares and maintains various reports, detailed inspection findings, and department activities; and coordinates preventative maintenance and repair of equipment used in inspections.

Assists with preparing and monitoring department budget; assesses and makes recommendations department staffing, equipment and other budget allocation needs; monitors expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budget; and maintains budget and financial documentation.


Minimum Qualifications:

Associate’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or Architecture or a related field required; seven years of progressively responsible experience in code inspection, to include lead or supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this classification.

Specific License or Certification Required:  Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. Must possess and maintain, or attain within 12 months of employment, the following certifications from the International Code Council: Residential Building Inspector, Commercial Building Inspector, and Plans Review Certification. May be required to obtain and maintain additional certifications.
