A Day in the Life

The Cardiac Sonographer IV provides imaging support in the form of daily scan coverage, complex analysis as directed per protocol, image interpretation, and consulting services as needed. The role assists physicians, scientists, study directors, sponsors and staff with continuously identifying opportunities to improve key service functions that will increase or achieve high levels of customer satisfaction, while facilitating the complex multi-and inter-disciplinary care unique to Medtronic PRL. The role is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with key business units to ensure quality data collection and collaboration. The role is responsible for the daily operation and animal care activities in the imaging specialty he or she has been assigned. The role assists with equipment selection, planning and personnel decisions.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

Perform imaging at PRL:


  • Operates ultrasound imaging equipment independently as needed by staff's specific role such as TTE, TEE, ICE, etc.
  • Perform imaging exams as assigned which may include but not be limited to: cardiac, vascular, and abdomen.
  • Perform basic to complex image analysis such as creating reports with anatomical and functional measurements, assessing images for abnormalities, etc.
  • Support animal and human cadaver studies.
  • Monitors and controls quality assurance for imaging equipment, if applicable.
  • Troubleshoot imaging issues, equipment, and procedure related.
  • Continually evaluates and improves the process and procedures used to collect images.
  • Work with sponsors to create imaging plans and protocols for execution within a study.

Serve as an imaging expert within a given modality:

  • Perform complex image analysis, interpretation, and image reconstruction, etc.
  • Trains and advises new employees/contractors to routine imaging protocols and specialized studies.
  • Advanced knowledge of procedures, sufficient to inform study directors and sponsors in the event that abnormal results are obtained; ability to recognize and identify symptoms, exercise judgment, and react appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Role in staffing considerations such as interviewing and selecting new hires, general oversight of each imaging modality, work with upper management to further the goals of the department as needed.
  • Point of contact for billing questions, time availability, and general questions that pertain to imaging equipment.

Other duties may include:

  • Support of PRL's compliance to radiation regulations.
  • Support of human cadaver programs

Must Have: Minimum Requirements


  • Minimum of 8 years of ultrasound imaging experience and may require vocational or technical education or certification in addition to prior work experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Nice to Have


  • RDCS or RCS certification (preferred)
  • Catheterization lab and OR experience
  • Experience working in a regulated environment.
  • Basic knowledge of DICOM image storage and manipulation within a PACS system.
  • Experience with multiple/alternative scanning procedures.
  • 3D echo acquisition and analysis (e.g. Philips Qlab)
  • Vascular imaging experience or certification
  • Good computer skills, Excel, Word, Access and Outlook scheduling.
  • Flexibility in scheduling to allow sponsors latitude when planning studies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with customers, sponsors, study directors and other employees, gaining their confidence and cooperation.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Physically able to handle a wide variety of research animals
  • TEE and/or ICE experience

The provided base salary range is used nationally (except in certain CA locations). The rate offered is compliant with federal/local regulations and may vary by experience, certification/education, market conditions, location, etc.
