At T. Rowe Price, we invest in the future of our technology. We are looking for a Senior Java Back End Software Engineer who has a passion, vision and technical acumen to help drive strategic initiatives within our API Marketplace. 

This is a hands-on, full development lifecycle role which provides an opportunity to tackle sophisticated business, logic, data and technical challenges. As a senior member of your engineering team, you will be required to think creatively and bring groundbreaking technology in-house. We will expect you to be agile / to lead / to think outside the box. In this role you will design, develop, modify, adapt and implement short- and long-term solutions to information technology needs through new and existing applications, systems, databases and applications infrastructure. You will review and interpret system requirements and business processes as well as code, test, debug and implement software solutions. You will also: 


  • Design and develop solutions to business problems in alignment with the enterprise architecture direction and standards

  • Performs technical planning, architecture development, and modification of specifications

  • Develop specifications for new products/services, applications, and service offerings

  • Assess the compatibility and integration of products/services proposed as standards in order to ensure an integrated architecture across interdependent technologies

  • Lead projects or work streams and Work Independently

  • Be accountable for your work and sometimes others, provide process and standards advice in your area of specialization 

  • Serve as a resource for colleagues with less experience 

You will be responsible for: 


  • Performing as a domain expert in one or more parts of the software lifecycle (e.g., coding, testing, deployment). Leads significant pieces of development within the development lifecycle 

  • Contributing to the development of standard methodologies within your group 

  • Leading code reviews and actively participates in providing feedback on others’ designs/code 

  • Being accountable for technical debt in your own software 

  • Leading a small project team, as required 

  • Taking control of complex problems and step through them in a rational way 

  • Making tactical vs. strategic trade-offs 

  • Being flexible in your thinking; able to evolve a solution when additional information or ideas are presented 

  • Mentoring junior members of the team 

  • Identifying when junior engineers need help and providing it in a positive way that promotes confidence. 

  • Actively helping team members/make suggestions to improve practices. 

Business Knowledge


  • Makes decisions that are cognizant of the firm’s broader business strategy and future priorities

  • Recommends solutions aligned with Global Technology and business unit strategies
     

Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree or the equivalent combination of education and 5+ years of progressive Java development

  • Experience in AWS cloud technologies

  • Designs and develops practical APIs and abstractions. 

  • Expertise designing, developing, deploying, and supporting java-based solutions

  • Experience mentoring and leading development teams

  • Able to debug large components with limited assistance and assists other engineers  

  • Owns technical debt and helps the team effectively manage it 

  • Practices automated testing and tests their own code in an automated and repeatable way

  • Able to quickly learn new technologies and stay abreast of industry trends

  • Able to work with existing data models and schemas and suggest changes and improvements

  • Stays abreast of industry trends and technologies and knows when/how/if to apply them appropriately

  • Lead by example, sets standards, follows principles related to paradigm like OO, SOLID, or FP

Nice to have


  • Experience with an API Marketplace

  • Previous financial services experience
