We are looking for an associate passionate about sustainable packaging with an emphasis on implementation across our North American Supply Network. You will be working with the Largest Gum Plant in the world (We are known for Spearmint & Juicy Fruit, just to name a few) . This role will focus on leading sustainable packaging project trials at all of our North American sites. You will get an opportunity to become familiar with each site and the respective packaging equipment. You will implement new packs, products, and raw materials by creating process specs and packaging running conditions to achieve all quality standards and deliver efficient operation on Mars Wrigley factory lines. Additionally, this role manages R&D line trials by coordinating requests with the site value stream, R&D, Engineering and Commercial to ensure optimal execution and knowledge capture. Additional responsibilities for this role include coaching and mentoring newer associates as well as acting as a regional expert in certain packaging or process technical areas.

What will be your key responsibilities?


  • Be the key R&D factory interface for Packaging and Product Developers during the design and implementation of new packs, products, and raw materials.

  • Apply Six Sigma and Design for Vertical Startup tools to evaluate, risk assess and translate new packs, products, and raw materials to the factory.

    • Assess alternate material vendors to ensure security of supply for critical items



  • Create factory process recipes from approved product recipes for new products and raw materials

  • Determine correct packaging target weights for optimal performance

  • Document critical processing parameters in process specifications

  • Supports development of standard run conditions and center lines as part of new product, process, and pack validation

  • Assist Technical Services and value stream associates with escalated problem-solving opportunities

Apply functional expertise to assist the regional DS1 FI team in optimization of the work across sites

Context and Scope


  • Partner with Product and Packaging Scientists as the key site contact for new pack, product and raw material launches to drive growth and value leadership.

  • Apply Six Sigma and Design for Vertical Startup tools that ensure efficient pack and product launches to drive growth and value leadership

  • Lead line trials to develop standard running conditions for new packs and products to ensure optimal and sustainable implementation of new items

  • Reviews material workflows to verify specifications and BOM accuracy

  • Advanced technical expert in the operation of process and packaging areas in the plant, providing troubleshooting expertise for level 4 problem solving escalations

  • R&D site lead for Handover 0, 1 and 2 for new products, packs, and raw materials

  • Work with site leadership and engineering teams to ensure process specifications are sufficient and updated at the completion of projects.

  • Partner with DS1 FI team members at other sites to share expertise, improve implementation of new items, and optimize project resourcing

Job Specifications/Qualifications

1 . Education & Professional Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a closely related scientific or technical disciplines with relevant professional internship and 3+ years' experience in a closely related industry.

  • Alternatively, 7+ years demonstrated success in relevant manufacturing / quality experience with a minimum of a high school diploma.


2. Knowledge/Experience

  • Strong understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP's), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP's), Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point Systems (HACCP), ISO, Regulatory Guidelines, Sensory, and/or Microbiology.

  • Preferred experience in food packaging and/or processing, with an understanding of processes and machine operation


  • Six Sigma Green Belt preferred

  • Demonstrated success influencing/leading others
