As a S&T Research Chemist, Entry, you will support physical testing operations in the PPG Silica Physical Testing Labs to lead new product development and business support initiatives by testing necessary physical and performance properties for both experimental and production precipitated silica samples and rubber test parts containing these silica products. The Chemist will partner directly with the PPG Silica R&D team to confirm testing protocols and execute test plans. The Chemist will work with chemists and technicians in the Physical Testing Labs to ensure safe and efficient operation while achieving important deliverables and objectives and driving continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities
• Promote and ensure safe work in the Physical Testing Labs, including the operation of equipment and handling of chemicals. Experience working in the 5S System (or similar workplace organization system) to maximize worker efficiency and safety.
• Learn and conduct a variety of analytical tests and procedures to characterize precipitated silica products and rubber materials containing silica products, including porosimetry, density, tear strength, abrasion resistance, mechanical properties, and rheological properties.
• Provide support to ensure that Physical Testing Lab equipment and instrumentation is maintained and calibrated, with a clear focus on delivering high-quality testing results.
• Collaborate with the PPG Silica R&D team to define testing plans and important questions to be answered through physical testing.
• Participate in ISO 9001 audits as required by the PPG Silica business and ensure all measuring devices under ISO 9001 certification receive calibration certificates.
• Ensure Physical Testing Lab compliance with PPG Environment, Health, and Safety requirements and housekeeping guidelines, including organization and handling of raw materials and experimental samples.
• Contribute to the development and documentation of test methods and standard operating procedures.
• You will support components of R&D projects where physical testing and rubber testing compounding is essential.
• Analyze experimental data to contribute new knowledge and guide new product development.
• Solve technical problems through scientific, experimental, and statistical methods.
• Support scientific knowledge exchange with technical associates to promote knowledge retention and collaboration.
• Support collaboration to ensure understanding on technical deliverables, progress, and future needs.
• Thoroughly document findings, observations, measurements, data, and test results for communication to team members, the Manufacturing organization, and leadership.
• Communicate technical conclusions through written and verbal summaries, reports, presentations, and updates.
• Both contribute ideas for new technologies to enable new product development and customer base expansion.

Qualifications
• 3 years of work experience in a chemical laboratory setting and a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a relevant technical field, such as Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or an Engineering discipline with a background in chemistry.
• Implement technical procedures and test methods and experience operating analytical testing equipment.
• Experience documenting and communicating research findings and performance testing results via detailed technical reports and presentations.
