As a Continuous Improvement Director, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

Freedom to Act


  • Works with Area operations, site, organization leaders and leadership teams and has direct responsibility for long-term strategic planning, operating plans and establishing improvement objectives for organizations in the next 1-2 higher level tiers.

  • Responsible for Area, site/organization goals, objectives, strategy, and performance.

  • Approves assigned programs and budget deviations as well as overall resources to meet business objectives.

People Management


  • Management responsibility encompasses an Area, BG, multiple CI Senior Managers and/or several disciplines within or across Functions.

  • Establishes goals, priorities, timetables and assigns resources/tasks. Accountable for the results and performance of their Area, Site/organization.

Analytical and Problem Solving


  • Leads, guides, and helps create solutions for highly complex and multi-faceted problems, requiring ingenuity, creativity, innovation, and strong analytical skills. Problems are unique and require thorough understanding of operating unit policies and practices. Applies knowledge of different techniques and practices to achieve desired results.

  • Utilizes resources across work areas, departments, and businesses to create solutions.

  • Understands connection between operational improvements (e.g., machine productivity, labor productivity, lead time/turnaround time, quality, backlog, capacity, OEE, etc.) and financials (Revenue/TVOS, Cost, Cash, Margin)

Business Impact and General Working Tasks


  • Has a major business impact on the organization due to significant scope of responsibility and complexity of duties. Typically, relates to a large, established business or a medium, developing business with high complexity or growth potential.

  • Decisions have long-term impact on more than one area of the organization as well as multi-site.

  • Responsible for Area, site/organization goals, objectives, strategy, and performance.

Interaction


  • Communicates with senior functional leaders, top business leaders, direct subordinates, and external clients on the highest level. Primary contacts are typically both internal and external.

  • Shares vision and demonstrates company values. Provides implementation, deployment (across multiple sites) and results focused consulting to site/organization leaders across multiple sites.

  • Interaction is primarily focused on providing guidance on how to improve, approach, identify and understand a root cause driver to performance with managers, site/organization leadership.

Your Skills and Expertise 

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution

  • Twelve (12) years of relevant working experience in a private, public, government, or military environment in one or more of the following areas: quality, product/process/project engineering, project management, or manufacturing.

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:


  • Expert/master knowledge and extensive experience with most current and advanced theories, practices, and improvement approaches within multiple related professional disciplines within a Function.

  • Understanding of how to approach improving business/division/group/organization level metrics such as revenue/TVOS, Cost, Margin, Cash, Service, and Speed.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of 3M’s global strategy, business areas, division, and organization structure, as well as the external market.

  • Experience building, planning, and executing improvement strategies at Area, site/organization levels.

  • Possesses solid market know-how (competitors, trends, etc.).

  • Utilizes this business knowledge to educate others.

  • Experience with various type of improvement (approaches): Continuous Improvement projects and ​Kaizen Events

Work location: On site  (Dekalb, IL)

Travel: May include up to 15% domestic/international

Relocation Assistance: May be authorized.

Applicable to US Applicants Only:The expected compensation range for this position is $251,462 - $307,343, which includes base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position.
