Early Elementary Program Description

At The Frances Xavier Warde School, our early elementary music program provides students with a curriculum that reflects our school mission of multiculturalism and diversity while fostering an appreciation and understanding of music. The music teacher employs a variety of instructional practices surrounding vocal, instrumental, movement and literacy in subject content. The program maintains a balance of experience-based learning and performance-oriented activities and is the teacher for general music and liturgical music.

Primary Function

The early elementary music teacher is responsible for educating the whole child through music education. The teacher must possess the knowledge and theory to instruct in general music and liturgical music, while using age-appropriate methods and procedures. The teacher needs to cantor for school liturgies.

Key Relationships

The early elementary music teacher reports to the principal and is supervised, evaluated and mentored by the principal and or assistant principal. Other key relationships include the Head of School, Religion Coordinator, and the elementary teachers, staff, students, and parents.

Qualification and Requirements

A candidate should hold:

A Bachelors or Masters Degree in Education with a concentration in Music or equivalent 3-5 years of experience

Experience in Catholic liturgical music and religious music

A valid, issued State of Illinois teaching certificate Type 10 in Music is preferred

A candidate will need upon hiring:

A TB test

Must comply with Archdiocese of Chicago Protecting God's Children Requirements (Background Screening, Fingerprinting, VIRTUS Training, CANTS, Code of Conduct)

A candidate must demonstrate:

The ability to establish collaborative relationships with teaching staff

Familiarity with ISACS criteria and standards of excellence

Proficiency in at least one musical instrument

Cantors at Masses, Prayer Services and Sacraments
