ECS is seeking a Materials Science, Engineering and Technology Advisor to work in our Arlington, VA office. Please Note: This position is contingent upon contract award.



Job Description:

ECS provides Systems Engineering and Technical Advising (SETA) support to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in a dynamic environment pursuing impactful and cutting-edge research. We're seeking candidates with a technical background in areas related to material science and engineering to support management of current and planned programs at the intersection of optics and astronomy. The successful candidate will have exceptional organizational skills and experience in project management.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Provide expertise on the fundamental properties of metamaterials as they relate to photonic and space applications.
  • Support further research solicitation and proposal evaluations activities associated with multidisciplinary physics
  • Lead and conduct periodic performer assessments to analyze program, technical and schedule risks; develop risk mitigation strategies
  • Provide technical evaluations and guidance on reports, briefings, and other performer communications
  • Program administration, including development of technical analyses, identification of technology gaps, technical risk management, project cost estimation, technology transfer efforts, as well as supporting technical reviews
  • Stakeholder engagement, including programs across the various DoD agencies and services.
  • Interagency engagement, including coordination activities with the DoD, DoE, and potentially international partnerships.
  • Attending and organizing program reviews/site visits/field tests.

Required Skills:


  • Master's degree in Physics, Materials Engineering, or related technical field

  • Ability to obtain a DoD Secret clearance
  • In-depth knowledge of material selection considering factors such as performance and environmental conditions for various applications
  • Experience with materials testing and characterization
  • Excellent technical writing skills, including the ability to perform proof reading and quality control on technical documents and slides
  • Excellent communication skills - including the ability to clearly explain complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including MS Project
  • Self-starter who is willing to work in an inter-disciplinary work environment
  • Strong organization skills with the ability to multi-task and respond to quick turn-around requests

Desired Skills:


  • Active DoD Secret clearance
  • 2+ years of relevant experience
