We are hiring! Atkins is seeking a Senior Environmental Scientist to join our Orlando, FL office.

This role will exercise technical expertise and provide project oversight for a diverse range of complex projects in the field of infrastructure, environmental science, and consulting. This position will help drive our central Florida operations as a senior technical staff member in the field and in the office, managing and performing natural resources surveys, designing, overseeing and guiding large-scale data collection and analysis, supporting cost estimates, and interacting with clients, subcontractors, private parties, members of the public, and regulatory agencies. This role will also have a mentoring component, seeking to enhance the expertise of others in the team. While this is a technical-forward role, you will also participate in business development and marketing efforts. While the position is in Florida and the focus will be on Florida-based projects, it is expected your expertise may be applied to projects across the US, as needed.

The Sciences team includes a nationwide reach of biologists, certified ecologists, marine biologists, professional wetland scientists, arborists, botanists, wildlife biologists, and environmental planners who are focused on addressing the unique concerns of a variety of clients including energy and utilities, ports and airports, Federal and State transportation entities, state, county, and city governments, and Federal agencies including the U.S. Corps of Engineers, Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Park Service.

How will you contribute to the team?


  • Development of study plans, water quality and quantity monitoring programs, conduct/participate in natural resource field investigations, including but not limited to waters of the US; potential habitat for threatened and endangered species; vegetative community; presence/absence surveys, specimen collection and handling; construction monitoring; coastal and marine surveys, wetland mitigation design, water quality data analysis, hydrobiological/biostatistical analyses, and ecosystem restoration.


  • Prepare technical report of findings; support preparation of permits, NEPA (and/or PD&E) documents and provide peer reviews of reports prepared by others.


  • Serve and as in-office (and in-field as needed) team leader for staff. Mentoring junior staff will be a critical part of the success of this position.


  • Responsible for planning field work and reporting efforts, while coordinating schedules and milestone goals with various parties


  • Effectively communicate the results of studies performed to project management staff.


  • Help lead proposals, scopes, technical approaches, and fee estimates in the development of new business. Prepare project work plan, schedule, and budget, and communicate to project team members


  • Assist in the management of tasks and projects and serve as a Project Manager.


  • Must be comfortable working and coordinating with a multidisciplinary team that may include ecologists, design engineers, cultural resources specialists, historians, and planners, among others, typically in different offices.


  • Monitor, coordinate and/or provide direction on quality control efforts


What will you contribute?


  • B.S./B.A. or M.S. in a field of natural resources science, such as Biology, Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Marine Biology, Botany, or a related discipline. M.S. or graduate level coursework preferred but not required. This level may be achieved by Scientists with minimum ten years' experience since Bachelor's degree, or eight years' experience with Master's degree; typical incumbent has ten to twelve years' experience.


  • Desire to work with various clients and stakeholders throughout Florida to develop new business and design innovative solutions to complex environmental issues.



  • Significant experience with clients and disciplines in one or more of the following:



    • Environmental studies and permitting for the transportation industry (ports, highways, aviation, for example)


    • Water quality studies and restoration


    • Power industry (generating facility siting, permitting and compliance, transmission line routing)


    • State/local agencies such as water management districts and environmental agencies


    • Federal agencies such as the US Army Corps of Engineers, US Fish and Wildlife Service, or the National Park Service


    • Wetland delineation, permitting, mitigation, and restoration


    • Coastal ecology studies and restoration




  • Proven analytical skills, technical writing, computer and communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills; good public speaking ability; willingness to manage projects financially; knowledge of production support systems such as geographic information systems (GIS). The ideal candidate would have direct experience and knowledge in the ecosystems of Florida (i.e., vegetation identification).


  • Expertise with local, state and federal regulatory agencies and permit preparations.


  • Professional certification such as a Professional Wetland Scientist or Certified Ecologist a plus, but not required.


  • Credentials to conduct specialized protected species surveys and permitting in Florida, such as an authorized gopher tortoise agent or Audubon’s crested caracara qualified observer is a plus, but not required.


  • Ability to work under the pressure of multiple projects.


  • Snorkeling skills and/or SCUBA certification is a plus, but not required.


  • Position requires driving a company vehicle; candidate must have a valid driver's license and a driving record that meets company policy.


  • Demonstrated potential to conduct intensive, field-based activities as part of an interdisciplinary team, which may include multi-day travel, long field days, and challenging conditions (e.g., heat, insects, strenuous physical conditions). Periodic travel is to be expected (about 30%).
