Job Description:

New England Biolabs (NEB) is looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist to lead a research group on restriction-modification systems in the Molecular Genetics and Genomics Division. Successful candidate will lead a fully funded research team as a Staff Scientist (Group Leader) in a diverse and supportive Research Department dedicated to exploring basic science and developing innovative technologies.

Candidates from all scientific disciplines are encouraged to propose research programs in one of the following areas:


  • Biology of novel restriction-modification systems


  • Discovery and characterization of restriction enzymes and related DNA endonucleases


  • Biochemistry, mechanism or structure-function studies of restriction enzymes and methyltransferases


  • Applications of restriction enzymes in diagnostics, synthetic biology, genetic engineering, sequencing, epigenetics, genomics, and other related areas of biotechnology


Responsibilities include:


  • Create and implement a research plan for a small group of research scientists, postdocs and students


  • Provide leadership and mentorship to team members


  • Collaborate with internal and external research groups to advance shared research interests


  • Draw upon core infrastructure to advance own research goals


  • Establish leadership in the scientific community through publications, conference attendance and establishing collaborations


Required Qualifications and Experience:


  • Ph.D. with preferred postdoctoral experience in the fields of molecular biology or related fields, with preferred experience in enzyme kinetics or biochemistry


  • Proven scholarship and leadership in their field through publications and participation in international conferences


  • Excellent scientific communication and presentation skills


  • Ability to both lead and contribute positively to a larger scientific team
